Silkie thread!

Here are my weekly baby update pics. They are a little over 5 weeks and almost 7 weeks. Still to early to sex I'm sure. I have homes for 6 of them already. They are so funny to watch.

I have a question. I am new to silkie genetics so please be easy on me but...I have a white roo and three hens White, Blue, and black. all my chicks that are hatching are yellow with a brown tint. What color will they be? They look almost buff colored but it's not a uniform color and I don't understand how that is even possible. Shouldn't I have a variety of colors?

My guess is your chicks are probably White. White can start out cream colored. If you have pictures please share. Another person here got a Splash from that type of breeding (White was hiding Blue) - they start out light and get their dark feathers later on. How many chicks hatched?

White x White = White. White x ANY OTHER COLOR = ??????? We don't know what is under the white, what those genetics are. White is a can with the label taken off - you don't know what is inside. You can get Blue, Black or Mixed colors and all of the chicks will carry recessive White so when you breed any daughters back to the White father and half the chicks will be White again. Your Black and Blue may carry recessive White also. And Buff can hide under White, but feather patterns change quite a bit as they get older, especially in mixed genetics like your Blue/Black to White crosses. Buff is usually not chosen as a base for White, the combs are too light because of the genetics under some of the Buff.

Share some pictures and let us enjoy the cute fluffies - and perhaps that will give us a better guess?

ok here's the first chick that hatched. It's the only picture on my phone so it will have to work. It makes him look a lot lighter then he actually is. In person her looks darker.

I can't find a lavender breeding age bearded Silkie cockerel/roo anywhere near me. I've posted everywhere that I can think of. I had to my boy to sleep due to chronic wry neck that he had for 3 months and it was horrible. I'm going to the Knoxville show Dec 7. It will probably be my only chance of meeting up with someone from farther away that may have one. I have 5 Catdance ladies that need a hubby. Wanna get them bred soon, so that the babies will be ready to show in the fall. If anyone can help- please let me know! Thanks so much! I do have a post on classified section as well. And Craigslist.

Thanks!
Pam

I wanted to jump in and share my first silkies. I had five hatch. Three were born with a cone head, two were not. I have not named them yet. They are super chill and aren't expressing too much personality besides just "laid back". Not sure if that is just their demeanor, or if they are depressed or what. I cannot believe how CUTE they are!

Compared to my Serama chicks, that are in the same brooder, they are just laid back..
The Serama are very active, jump over the other chicks and generally are busy all the time..........
Very sweet pictures............

Thank you. I have not hatched anything that turned up being this laid back. This is just a trait of the silkie? Do they liven up at all? I mean, I am getting blank stares from them. It's fine that they are so mellow. I am just not used to having a brooder with chill chicks. Taking pics of them was a breeze. They just sat there LOL.

LOL! Yes they get more lively. My littles are bouncing around all over the place now. When they are a couple of weeks old they start exploring more. Enjoy the calm while you have it. I have to change water all the time and get shaving out of the food dish because they are constantly excavating and dust bathing.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Silkies.

The "coneheads" have valuted skulls - the flat-heads do not.

I think Silkies are the cutest chicks ever - all that fluff AND they keep it when the grow up so they stay cute forever. The are also pretty chill - although they will get more active as they get over that 3 day feeding they just absorbed before they hatched.

Adorable pictures, thanks for sharing them
