Silkie thread!

I really don't think its my Silkies. I haven't trimmed at all. I have on my Houdan, because she was getting ice blocks on her beard and crest, and I didn't know how she was doing it. So she got a feather cut in November.

The Silkies actually stay to themselves for the most part, they even roost on the other side of the coop with the Japanese Bantam, and a Cochin Bantam, and sometime the Houdan is over there too. They were raised with everyone out there that is the same age as them, and they are 3 months older then the new ones, but they were like raised with them, because I have a grow out pen that I set up in the middle of their main run, so everyone is with each other for almost 2 months before I let them out, and I've never had any issues.

Also I had originally 4 of them, but the other 2 where double the size of these 2, they like tanked this too, and one started crowing at 8 weeks, the other to follow at 11 weeks. So I really, truly don't think its one of them. But I have no idea who it is, and everyone is telling me these eggs are fertile.

So I go a cheap-o Little Giant Incubator Still Air the other day, its the only one I could find locally since is the middle of the winter. Everyone thought I was nuts wanting to incubate this time of year at the feed stores. Anyways, its been up and running for over 24 hrs at 100.2 with 16% humidity, as stated by the feed store guy, and a few people on my local thread said with the still airs they need to run a tad higher then the 99.9, and not to worry about the humidity until 3 days before hatch. So I have 6 eggs, that I collected the last 2 days to through in there, and the person who I actually bought the Silkies, is going to come over today with a few eggs for me to hatch out, since his are 100% for dead certain fertile, and he is going to look at all 18 of them out there, and figure out who HE is. Since no one can tell me off photo's. I've been driving me nuts. I've sat and stared out them for several, several hours this week too, and can't find the lucky mister out there that has 17 ladies all to himself.

Quote: When a broody won;t get off hte nest on her own, many will pick her up, walk a great distance away and place her in front of feed and water. Nine tmes out of ten, the bird will ravenously eat for a bit, then run around and drop a stinky broody poop bomb, o back to eating and drinking, and when she's had her fill, will ssedately walk back to her nest and cover her eggs.

I haven't seen photos of all the other birds, but I, too would bet it is one of them.

I hope you guys don't mind if I pop in and ask a question. I'm picking up a pair of 6 month old porcelain (sp?) silkies. When do silkies usually start to lay? Thank you!

Also, this may sound vague but how often do silkies go broody? I'm getting them so that they can sit on Iowa Blue eggs without me firing up my incubators :)

I think my post got lost. I'm picking them up today, I'm getting so excited because I've been wanting silkies for a long time!

Mine usually take 8+ months, although there are a few that will start a little before. Broodiness varies by bird. I have a few hens which have never gone broody, and then again I have a few hens which have gone broody 5 times this year! The usually will brood, raise the chicks to around 4 weeks, take around another 3 or 4 weeks to rest, then go right back to being broody. Mine usually go broody in pairs, strangely enough, and help each other with the chick raising. My roosters get in on chick raising as well.

Thank you! Honestly I can see myself getting hooked on this breed like I did AM's and Iowa Blues and 6 months later I'll have 20 of these cotton balls, LOL.

Still wondering about colors...Porcelain should be a cream color maybe some darker in the hackles? Any other colors in porcelain? As chicks sometimes spots? or not?
Splash is white with black spots or can it be more a cream with black spots?..
Trying to get a handle on what i have
I have gotten chicks from 2 people one said they were Porcelain the other said theirs were Splash. All started out white with black spots now some don't seem to have any spots and are more cream with a darker reddish cast to the roos hackles and maybe a streak of a few hairs of black in a spot or 2
Only one pullet has a few spots and shes lighter than the males not sure if you would call her cotton white
Here are my pics not too good im afraid First are supposed to be splash both roos
one pullet. picture 2 .. splash? has spots lighter color but not pure cotton white .
Same cockrels in the 3rd picture

Below are the Porcelain...

These pic 4 the "porcelain" seem to have more black combs too. 2 pullets and a cockrel I think

I googled "porcelain silkie" and there were a lot of birds with a creamy color along with some bluish tints. I'm no expert by any means but that's what I came up with.
