Silkie thread!

Yes, they will be able to stay warm.  She is a super-incubator - ones that aren't ready and don't need the heat/humidity get moved out, the ones that NEED to stay hot and wet are directly under her.  I know curiosity gets the best of us, but it is really best NOT to mess with her while she is Pancaked -its like opening up the incubator when the chicks are hatching - not recommended!  She can compensate better than in incubator - but does better if left alone...

As for the cool eggs - I had one that I thought was a gonner because my broody pushed it away from her - it was very cool to the touch.  I left moved it towards her and she tucked it under again - and the next day it hatched.  Sometimes if there are too many eggs they can roll away - but even if they cool down they can still hatch.

And yes, you can hear peeping in the eggs for up to a day before they hatch - they start that when they pip internally into the inner air sack - that peeping means their lungs are learning how to work.  Their next job is to run out of air and go into convulsions that cause them to pip externally.   That is the tapping noise we hear.   I know it sounds awful - but without that lack of air they don't hit strongly enough to break the egg shell.  After they pip externally THEN they start absorbing the yolk and the blood vessels that brought the nutrients to them from the albimum.  They get quiet when they do this - and it can take up to a day also.  This is when most people get concerned about the chick - its quiet - its not doing anything.. its STUCK!  NO, its NOT stuck - and seriously hands off right now - you can kill them by "helping"...  That yolk has enough food for three days - so they have three days to get out once they pip externally.

This is great information!! Thanks for sharing this!! I have 2 silkie eggs expected to hatch by next weekend....soooo exciting!! :)

No, that's the hens name. Type in ' chicken little the bravest little chicken alive.' In the search bar and you can read her story. I really should add these pics to the story.

Cotton My sweet little Frizzle or Sizzle? I cant remember which is which. I can tell you that both parents a silkies. the mama looks like her dad is normal silkie feathered. At almost 6 months I'm sticking with pullet.
Oh my gosh the CUTEST thing!! I have a white frizzle...would I get one of these if she was bred to a white silkie?? :)

Hmmmm. I just skimmed thru the thread and hit the color mixing posts. I have a Blue Partridge Roo with a blue and a splash silkie hens and a black sizzle hen. How crazy do you think they will get?

don't worry. my lovely hen has 6 toes. I think it can just be a malfunction. the extra toe doesn't hurt them.....it will just stop the chicken from being showed.

I ACTUAILY bred mine, to a japanese bantam

the chick came out with 5 toes. it is bantam sized....2x smaller than all other silkies. LOL
she has yellow on her face and feet.....her chest is white skin, her back black skin....so I call her milkshake

5 toes

this chick has a slightly vaulted head when she hatched .....
before I found this out I kept running my finger over it....wondering ehat the heck was wrong with it....I just did that now.

from when she hatched...

I hope I didn't press its head TOO hard.....

do you think it will be OK (because I pressed it)? know that I know what it is i wont press it anymore!

WILL SHE BE OK BECAUSE I PRESSED IT?!?!??!?!? God, im such a stupid worry wart.

Do any of you have vaulted chicks or grown birds? id surely like to see.

.............................................................................

Ok....so....today she is 4 days old.....is it too late to tell whether a male for female?

I tested her using an old wives tale.....the head hanging method.
It proved it a girl.

I THINK she is a porcelain....am I correct on that?

(she is the lighter silkie)

she doesn't have as dark chipmunk stripes as my partridge....so im thinking porcelain.
I have seen pics of the porcelain chicks, and some have stripes....but is MINE a porcelain?
