Silkie thread!

My naked neck silkie cockerel is NOT enjoying this cold weather. Poor guy keeps his bare neck tucked back into his fluff most of the time. I 'winterfied' the silkie coop yesterday. Put plastic sheeting over the exposed portions of the run and put down thick layers of shavings. The silkies, of course, panicked at the sight of the new shavings and hid in their dogloo for the longest time. But after a while, they got up the courage to leave and set about scratching it up everywhere. I also gave my biggest crested girl a good crest and beard trimming. She may not be the prettiest thing now, but she can see and she won't get her face all wet anymore.
He needs a little scarf.

two questions:
1. has anyone else noticed this? my silkie eggs taste better than any other breed
2. how are showgirls sooo adorable?

Hello everyone! i have a silkie that i am trying to sex. I have attached a few pictures maybe you guys can help me out? I have had silkies a few times in the past and its so hard to tell if they are roosters or hens. To me this one looks like a rooster but haven't heard a crow from him. Any help is appreciated! Thank you ^_^
I'm pretty sure that's a boy :) Hope that's good news! -Pam
Pam, You have beautiful Silkies. We have a few and have been thinking of hatching. There are NOT many Silkie Lovers in New York State. What make of incyubator would you recommend? And what model? And should it have a turner. Your recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Aria

Quote: Wrong.

Black X white will not give splash. White crossed wth anything else is completely unpredictable, and black cannot parent a splash--never. Splash is two copies of the blue gene, so each parent must be either blue or splash.

Splash X splash always = splash.

The only exception is if the offspring is white, which turns OFF the colours genetically present in the bird. but the bird would still be a genetic splash

Choose the one with darkest comb and wattles. For pets anything is game. I will be breeding my blue boys to a dark buff (looks red) white sizzle and black frizzle silkie. I'm defiantly going to get more silkies and want some of all colors. I run all mine together which makes the breeders of show silkies cringe. I have a silkie egg I put in with some D'anver eggs just to test for fertility and it is most likely crossed with a Porcelain d'Uccle. They should hatch Thursday. Here are my boys as you can see they have leakage too. They are great quality and because of the leakage I got a wonderful deal.

Their full sister and brother, from an earlier breeding, are blue partridges. I don't know the genetics involved. Maybe they can be bred with a partridge. (?)

so far, all I DO know is that if you breed a black and white, you get a splash....but if you breed two splash together, you DO NOT get a splash. also, I have a silkie mix...just hatched December 31st. her name is Milkshake....yeah. she has white skin on her belly, black skin on her back. which is why I named her milkshake:lol: It relly depends what type of chicken you breed with the silkie. if you bred another black skinned chicken with it then it WILL have black skin. if you breed it with white skinned bird, you may come out with another milkshake!
Blue silkies usually have one white toenail, whereas black silkies have all black toes.

Thanks so much! As far as incubators, I'm not a good one to ask. I'm just starting out, and got a cheap one that I got on ebay. It came in a package deal that has the electric turner. It's a Hovabator. The first couple of hatches, it worked great. Now, tho, I'm having trouble with the humidity. My last hatch didn't go so well because of it. Thanks for the compliment :) -Pam
