Silkie thread!

Father was white, mother was splash

apparently both carrying a partridge gene. You could also breed the blue to splash to get some splash (and blues). Don't know how the gold leakage would work in that. I wouldn't think it wouldn't show in the splash, but maybe in the blues. Then, you maybe could keep the blues that don't have the leakage. I'm not totally sure if that will weed out the gold gene. I'm afraid that since my splash had the gold leakage blue chicks, that they always will? Maybe they won't, if the roo that I have for them now doesn't have the gold gene. I'm not good at genetics!

I love going into the den and seeing all the kids with their parents. So cute. I wanted to ask, my broodies have water next to them and food. I take them off the nest twice a day to eat and drink and poop. I have just been setting them down in the box with Booker and the three hens (the kids go back into the brooder during the day and sleep with their parents at night), anyway, I haven't been seeing my broodies drink much water. They eat a little, but they feel like they have lost weight to me and I'm getting concerned. I had broody hatches in october and wasn't so concerned because they ate and drank really well. Snow was one of my broodies from Oct and is sitting on eggs now. Ashes is new. I have been thinking about giving Snow ashes eggs, and putting Ashes back with the flock, but I feel bad doing that. Any advice?

So cute snuggled up with daddy and the hens.

When I have more than 1 broodie in a pen they take turns at tending to their own needs. When one gets up the other or others will reach out and roll her eggs under them. If you decide to return her to the flock another hen or hens will tend to her eggs. I collect eggs year round and only let a broody have eggs when I want chicks. I don't let them keep eggs in cold weather. If your concerned about her loosing weight maybe you should return her to the flock. I would.

They are taking it very seriously. lol. Its adorable, but I don't want her to hurt herself. Snow is experienced and knows when to eat. I'm just afraid I won't be able to break Ashes of her broodiness. She has been broody off and on for a month and then the week before I gave her eggs she was broody the whole time. I couldn't break her, so I gave her some eggs. Do you think it would help if I seperated them and gave them each their own totes to be in? They are in my house.

I'm pretty new to chickens so please forgive me if this is a totally stupid question but what do you do with an abundance of silkies? Do you eat them? Are they easily rehomed? I know full size chickens are regularly processed but I can't imagine eating a silkie!

I currently have three I got "by accident" and am having to drive for several hours to rehome the boy (sob!) but I watch this thread and see a bunch of you happily hatching away. Doing the math, you can't really keep all the boys you hatch, can you?

Have you tried making her a mash by mixing warm water with feed and throw in a handful of meal worms and put it right in front of her and leave it for awhile see is she eats better. Mixing the water in helps with their water intake too. Best of luck.

I will try that. She is so zoned out most of the time. I threw some scratch in her food which usually gets her attention but she just doesn't seem interested. I was wondering if having them together is making them nervous, and they don't want to get off the nest because of each other. They don't seem nervous, but separating them might be better. I didn't want to have to reintegrate them that much when it comes time to put them back with the flock.
