Thanks for the info, I really appreciate it. It breaks my heart to see them laying there helpless.

No problem. It is stressful. Another thing that helped some of mine that didnt have a broody, was to put a stuffed animal in the brooder in a way that the chicks can be under it safely. They can then stand up under it and put pressure on it to use their legs. It seems to comfort them also. Thanks for the info, I really appreciate it. Quote: Most silkies, given a choice, will make a pile rather than roosting of sleeping by themselves. Heck, none of my breeds like to sleep alone--they roost next to each other...or pile together. Winter piles tend to be very compact, with the high pecking order hens in the bottom middle, lower pecking order hens farther out and the roosters around the edge. Chicklets snuggle under the pile, not necessarily just under their own mama. A summer pile is very loose--only one layer deep, and space between birds. However, the arrangement of head hen in the center remains the same.
I'm not sure by the picture, but is there exposed flesh on the stomach? (Beside the vent area) if so then he hatched without absorbing all the yoke or something like that. This happened to one of my chicks and they never fluffed out correctly either, it also couldn't walk, and it died after a day or so. I'm sorry :/
Thank you. What beautiful babies you haveI'm so glad you're enjoying them! And if you are breeding for correct type then you shouldn't let that hens eggs hatch.![]()
If you are breeding to show , 6 toes are no good, but if you are just wanting pets then her eggs are as good as anyone else's. You won't necessarily get chicks with 6 toes.I know this thread started a few years ago. But I am new and wanted to introduce myself. My name is Meg. My husband and I adopted 4 Silkies from a family friend who raises Silkies. We have had them for a few weeks now and they are such a joy. I have never raised chickens. I grew up on a ranch and only worked with horses, cows, goats and camels even. But no birds. A whole new world.I am enjoying my new babies. I am pretty sure I have 3 hens and 1 roo. Maybe 2 hens 2 roos.
I can not wait to get our new coop built. We have them in a small pen right now in our garage due to the cold. As you can see the beauty in front is most defiantly a hen. She seems very Broody. Very motherly. She rounds up them younger ones and makes them lay with her. It is so funny. And when we take her out to walk around she gets very vocal with them until we grab them and put them with her. I can not wait to get some more. Loving it!!! Oh 2 are full white and 2 are paints. I do have a question.. One of my paints have 6 toes vs. the 5 toes. Should I make sure her eggs don't get fertilized (if she is a she)? I heard that I shouldn't but wasn't sure.
