One of the things you might want to keep in mind when deciding between hatchery and breeder (feeds store/tsc birds are generally hatchery) is that the big hatcheries are going for quantity and the breeders are going for quality. A quality breeder will cull deeply in order to produce the best birds they can and a large hatchery is more concerned with their bottom line.Would the tsc silkies be good for breeding? Meaning would some of the offspring have more fuzzy feet? Would I be better off finding a private seller?
I live in Washington and she lives in New Jersey, I was just asking for any breeders closer to her, what good what it do me to post in my "state" forum? Sorry I did not know looking for breeders was not allowed on this thread....
I read that silkies don't do well with pellets. That's what I've been feeding. I was wondering if its ok to try adding medicated chick start to try before I go buy a big bag of crumbles?
You were right to ask that question. I've had a couple of breeder friends that have lost a some to choke. I think soaking it like we've been talking about will help. Also could try the Nutrena with the small pellets. Kind of expensive tho. $17.00 for a bag that is less than 50lbs. Forgot the size, I'll need to check it out next time I go out. I did catch one of my hens trying to cough something up once. _Pam
