Silkie thread!

Just so everyone knows, my last comment was not meant to be offensive. I know bipolar can be a very serious condition, I jut believe it is highly OVER diagnosed these days. :)

quick coop question.... building our first coop for the silkies, my husband really likes the raised coops so they will have a litte "front porch" and a place to go underneath. however I am worried the silkies will just fall off the "porch" I will have a ramp on it, but not on the entire thing, just going down the front. please let me know what anyone things. should I just build a coop flat on teh ground or an elevated coop??

Silkies are just as agile as other breeds, but they do need a good ladder. Beware that if you make it off the ground that you are giving the Broodiies somewhere to 'stash ' eggs. My silkie hut has a gap of only 5 inches and currently there is a hen hiding under there and I can't reach her or the eggs.
It definately has it's benefits when there is a hawk around though. So my advice is to make it high enough for you to get under . We converted this cubby and enclosed the bottom .

This is what we are turning into our silkie coop, keep in mind we still have 2 windows and an next box that we can get the eggs from the outside, paint it and we are going to raise it 2 ft. at 2 ft I can get under it if I need too and they can too.

With a lick of paint it'll be great. Don't forget the ramp and possibly some ventilation holes at the top end of the box.

gorgeous coops! my kids have a playhouse I could do this with, altho they wouldn't agree.... :) and point well taken with the elevated coop.... think I will stick with on the ground for now and revisit a raised coop later in life. thank you for sharing!

Oh I do hope it's just a bruised foot.

You must be psychic Fancychooklady! Thank you for the well wishes! The doctor said no broken bones and no chicken paralysis which rules out most of the chicken diseases i.e. Mareks etc. He said she is favoring some tender bruising and gave anti-inflammatory medication every 24 hours. She loves droppers so it was so easy to give her oral medicine and then we reward her w/ a tiny taste of her Poly-Vi-Sol no iron vitamins. She loves it. She's had only one dosage of the anti-inflammatory and already moving around so much better. Now I'll have an invalid Silkie in-house for a few days again.

I wish I had never mixed Silkies with LF. I've had nothing but a variety of problems with the mixed flock and not enough room to segregate them in our tiny yard. Now we have to make a wider ramp to the nestboxes so the bigger chickens don't kick the Silkies down to the floor from the nestbox-ledge which the ledge into the boxes is only about 6 inches wide. The current ramp is also too narrow IMO so we'll make it a little wider to more than one foot. The Silkies jump but don't fly so they can really get tossed around by clumsy LF. We have sweet LF breeds now that submit to the Silkies but they of course don't realize that their LF actions can inadvertently injure the Silkies who can't fly out of harm's way.

This is the coop we just finished for my Silkies. The frame is the metal crate 4wheelers come in. DH nought it at Yamaha shop for $20 total cost was about $60.
