I have a question for all you silkie peeps. Is a red comb on a silkie a genetic anomaly or a result of cross breeding? I understand it's a fault however does that fault stem from a gentic fluke or does it stem from cross breeding? ? Most of my silkies have black or mulberry combs but I have two that developed into very small reddish combs. They are black skinned, 5 toed, extra fluffy, beautifully feathered feet, correct beak color and leg color, just as my other silkies but these two developed a small red comb while my others are black combed. So my question is, would the red comb fault be a result of cross breeding along the way or is it a genetic anomaly that can happen in silkies from time to time? Hopefully someone can answer this for me. Thanks

Can silkies fly? My silkie chicks can spmewhat fly and it looks like they have hard feathers in their wings

They don't fly as much as take running jumps. My Black Silkie takes running jumps into the nestbox. She has a ramp but both Silkies have strong jumping legs. To discourage the jumping in or out of the nestboxes we are widening the ramp so they'll HAVE to use it to get up and down. I just brought back an injured Silkie from the vet because one of the clumsy LF pushed her off the nestbox ledge and Silkies can't fly to break a fall. If the ramp had been a bit wider she would have rolled off rather than dropped off! Thank goodness nothing was broken but vet said she got bruised and gave anti-inflammatory medicine. She's 100% better 3 days later but still keeping her in-house for a couple more days.

I saw both Silkies in flock combat 2 weeks ago 4 feet straight up in the air so they can really jump high. They flap their wings a lot as if they want to fly but it's really only a strong jump. The 2 Silkies settled their combat and are best buds now toodling around together.

Bipolar here in Arkansas lithium is a life saver :) but all joking aside I love all the silkie chicks on here mine are getting so Big well not com paired to my other chicks now for my question how old are your silkies before you let them out in yard my friends are starting to think my 2 7 week old slikies and 3 5 WK old silkies are house birds :p

Hi in Arkansas and it's wonderful to find all the Bipolars coming out of the "closet" LOL. So glad to hear about your success on meds.

I kept one of my Silkies 4-months in-house and let her toodle outside daytime with a fence between her and the flock so they could get used to her before integrating her at 6 months old. After integration she got attacked by a huge Cuckoo Marans who was re-homed. It wasn't until we re-homed an aggressive White Leghorn also before she started to toodle around with the other older Silkie. I won't try integrating just one pullet at a time. Too stressful for them. Glad I don't have to add any more this year. With only 5 hens zoned it's not easy to integrate more than one pullet at a time or we'd be over-limit.

It is a DQ in the show ring but like 4 and sometimes 6 toes it's just something that rears it's head from time to time. I have experienced both and mine are definitely pure bred.

before i got silkeie, i did a lot of reasearch on them (as you do!) and lots of website said that when you go silkies they would 'take over' the rest of your flock. are they meaning that silkies are at the top of the pecking order (mine aren't) or what?? i've had silkies for about nearly 2 years now, and i dont get what they are talking about....

It depends on the context of the conversation. They may have meant that once you become a silkie lover you will eventually loose interest in other breeds.
