Silkie thread!

Well after all the work and lost sleep... my baby, Crook, died a couple hrs ago. I did everything i could do and all that was recommended but she lost her battle with Wry Neck. I think she was just getting weaker by the hour. This morning when I checked her she was squawking and chirping like she was in awful pain! I fed her what vitamin enriched feed I could get down her and gave her vitamin water too. I was hoping she'd pull through.

We were all pulling for Crookie. But Mother Nature wanted to take her home - a way for only the strongest to survive. Hope you don't have to go through that again. Chicks are either super healthy or then there's some that we get attached to trying to save. Happened to us last year losing 2 chicks. One we knew was ill and not going to make it - she never grew like her sister. The other one we lost was a complete surprise - suffered a sudden seizure. We loved both of them so much and still feel bad but know that it happens with chicks and juvies.

Just a little chiming in if I may share. Per my vet he's not into using aspirin on small fowl because of possible internal organ damage like liver pancreas stomach etc. He does however prescribe metacam oral for daily dosage to my Silkie for swelling/inflammation. He's even cautious about the baby vitamin Poly-Vi-Sol but told him I use the no iron variety sparingly no more than one drop 2-3x week for my chickens. He was okay with the low dose and limited use - I give about 2 drops per LF 2x a week and 1 drop per Silkie 2x/week - broody Silkies get one extra drop per week. Of course, we were talking about "healthy" chicken care. For a wry neck chick it will need probably daily doses of a drop maybe spread out over several applications during the day. Don't want to give a little chick a whole dropperful of any medicine at once. There are different vit C forms and the orange in baby aspirin is not the best for fowl.

A good trick I picked up on youtube about giving oral liquid medication and it works great w/our LF and Silkies. Instead of forcing the beak open and possibly having liquid medicine go down into its lungs, we put a drop of the med on the side of the beak away from the nostril and the bird will open its mouth and lick off the annoying drip with its tongue. Sometimes a bird will shake off the drop so just put another drop on the side of the beak, it eventually licks the annoying drop. We have one LF and one Silkie that actually run up to us to get their vitamin drop now because we never forced their beaks open. The 2nd Silkie is beginning to look forward to the dropper when she sees it.

Everyone is different and has good experience to share. Just hoping some of this will help someone as it was my experience along with a vet's input.

One thing I would love to see is a photo of someone's chick with a wry neck neckbrace. A picture saves a 1000 words.

As she got better, I used a wristband. I folded it in half because she was still small. it worked out for awhile, but like all things foreign, she didn't want anything to do with it. SO it was mostly holding her then she tolerated it.

I know its really sad what's happening to ur chick, but that 1st pic is soo cute!! just saying :)

That is hysterical!! Is it bad that as I read that, I pictured myself chasing my kids around the yard with a mallet?? LOL

LMBO! No!!! Its normal! Well... At least for me it is. But who says I'm normal?
I love my kids with everything I have, but they are just little jerks 90% of the time. I know is my fault for apparently not raising them correctly, but haven't I suffered enough yet??? Lol
Seriously though, I would guess that everyone could see themselves doing that at some point, in their imaginations I mean, not for real!! :/

Good morning silkie folks!
I just wanted to drop a line to reintroduce myself. It's been over three years since I was last active on here, I used to go by cheshiechick13 (totally forgot my old password as well as the password to the email that account was linked to LOL). I had a beautiful flock of lavs and they were all massacred by a large dog early one morning. It was a mess of a situation. they were cooped and the dog got his big head in there and popped the door. Ironically I ended up marrying said dog owner (dog was immediately re-homed after that mess). Love my husband... not a fan of his former dog. I have been on a three year hiatus from chickens, I was so discouraged after that. I had spent so much time and money on those birds, I just gave it up after that. I guess I needed some time from that awful situation.
Well I'm back. I have 14 silkie eggs in the bator due to hatch on Monday (crossing fingers). If all goes well I'll have some Lav splits, buff lav splits, buffs, porcelains and even paints

Anywho I thought i would poke my head out of hiding and say hi!
