Silkie thread!

I'd say female, but I'm not the best at sexing
ok thanks, I want to photography my chicks, when I get them, and I've seen a lot of people on BYC that do a really good job!
Well Savage Seamless can be bought at most photography stores and isn't expensive, but I'd go to a craft store and get a nice big sheet of colored paper and would lay it down at an angle from a table to floor and secure it with tape. Try to shoot them in lots of natural light. I actually used a bounced flash and reflector for my shots but it really isn't necessary. I wish I'd snapped mine when they were only days old, but they seemed so fragile and we'd had a few losses, so I was afraid so cart them around and so on. They were so great on the paper though - just stood there still for me, pooped, and stood some more lol.

As she got better, I used a wristband. I folded it in half because she was still small. it worked out for awhile, but like all things foreign, she didn't want anything to do with it. SO it was mostly holding her then she tolerated it.

Absolutely ingenious. Wonder if you could patent something similar! Wry neck happens more often than we like and I bet a ton of chick owners would love one!

LMBO! No!!! Its normal! Well... At least for me it is. But who says I'm normal?
I love my kids with everything I have, but they are just little jerks 90% of the time. I know is my fault for apparently not raising them correctly, but haven't I suffered enough yet??? Lol
Seriously though, I would guess that everyone could see themselves doing that at some point, in their imaginations I mean, not for real!!

I told my kids so often - "the investment in raising kids isn't worth the meager returns" that today neither one has ever had children - both are over 45 so there won't be grandchildren. In this day and age and retired I don't have the energy for grandchildren either. Chickens are much more rewarding. My daughter agrees LOL. When a child goes wrong you can't return it but if an animal goes awry there's always re-homing or the pound.

Don't get me wrong - I loved my children before they were even conceived but I never knew it was so life-changing and having a good DH makes all the difference (the father was not such a person unfortunately) so I was a lonely soccer mom. Love my freedom now and get much more returns from the animals and a second DH that loves the hens as much as I do!

Oh my God, I haven't been on here for so long that I have 450 pages worth of reading to do. lol Probably might consider skipping most of it. hehe

I set some eggs in the incubator, I think we're going on day 6 or 7 now. I'm SO excited about hatching these eggs it's so ridiculous!!

This is my first time breeding my own birds and I'm very interested to see what I get. I'm hoping I picked some good birds for my first BBS pen.

Only sad thing is that looks like there's only 8 fertile out of two dozen.. Last year I had 0 fertile eggs, but the problem might have been my cockerel who was very young then. This year I didn't think to trim butts...but now that I know what my fertility percentage is, I'll be going out for bum patrol soon! LOL I'll set another batch of eggs once this first one hatches. Hopefully I'll have better luck with the next hatch.

What do you guys think??
Daddy, Ace

Blue hen, Iris

Last year, Iris mothered 3 chicks that needed a mommy. These were pet chicks that somehow ended up here at the farm. Being a non-profit rescue farm, we get all sorts of animals dropped off.

My black hen, Missy. She's very young in these two pictures still. I think she was barely a year, she's 2 this year. I better take some new pictures! lol

Then there's little Lila. She's an excellent broody hen also, best momma bird I've ever seen. The other two hens are better quality, I think, but Lila has better feet than any of my other birds and over all, I didn't think she looks that bad. And! These are the only BBS birds I have! lol Gotta start somewhere, right?

I buried our darkest Silkie hen, Friday. I think she was one of our original Silkies, which would make her about six years old. How old do Silkies usually live? We have eleven Silkies, including two roos that get along just fine. We're getting usually two eggs a day, enough for my husband's breakfast. I have no idea who is laying and who isn't and we really don't care--they're pets.

Hello All! I'm new to BYC and this thread :)
I hope everyone is well. I was just wondering if anyone has ever purchased a Silkie (any kind) through Welp Hatchery. I am weary of purchasing through a hatchery but no one in my state (CT) seems to have Silkies!

I live in CT and there are plenty of people here with Silkies!
Are you looking for a pet or something to breed/show? And what gender?
I have a porcelain cockerel that needs a home and I'll be hatching eggs this year. There are also lots of good groups on Facebook for CT chicken people.
