Silkie thread!

Not only do feed store employees know nothing about poultry care, but they don't even know what products they carry in the store they work in! They can't even ID the chick breeds in their communal brooders. They just want to sell you stuff. Even the owner of our 2nd neighborhood feed store is not all that knowledgeable about breeds of chickens even though he's ordered hatchery chicks for the last 10 years. People love to hear themselves give advice to feel important instead of having experience.

Fancychooklady and subhanalah and a couple others I can't recall immediately are good sources of poultry knowledge about Silkies.
I agree with you there :) Reading up on curled toes I am feeling more and more confident that this is the problem with my lil blue chick. I wish I knew why in the world though he'd have this when he was walking perfectly for 4 days before all a sudden acting crippled. I think im going to get creative and make him some corrective sandles :)

That was nice of you to gather all the info on one post. This Silkie thread is so popularly used that things get buried just a few pages backwards. Thank you!

Ooh ok, I thought this chick was letting its wings out more for balance since it doesent want to walk. I didnt think it was the heat. I didnt get another bulb yet and the house temp is perfect so I just turned the lamp off for now. Ill check on them in a bit and see what they are doing.

They definately need heat. 90 -95 degrees. If you leave them with no heat they will die. Have you ever felt the underside of a momma hen. She pecks her feathers out so the chicks are against her skin. You need to supply heat, just not too much.

Having 65 chickens and raising them from chicks forces you to research. I've been educating the staff at my local feed store and they often have questions for me when I pick up my stock feed. The problem is most people think that chickens pretty much look after themselves and never get sick. You need to supply shelter, clean water and a balanced diet. When things go wrong you need to provide care and if you don't have the means to get a vet in, then it is your duty to humanely dispose of the bird. In many cases the vet can't help because they simply don't treat many chickens and that is when a site like this comes into it's own. Talk to people that have dealt with the illness in question and had some success with treatment . Research and correct diagnoses are your best defence.

good idea ç) if they get cold, they will start peeping loudly, and you'll know they are unhappy.

I agree. We are just going round and round in circles, please read the link I gave you earlier.
Getting their environment right is of the utmost importance. Even a normal desk light would be better than 250 watts. In the pet shop you can get reptile heat mats. Research research and more research.
i went to my local petco and got the light kit and 75 watt bulb for my chicks and they are doing fine i also keep fish so i had an extra digital thermometer it keeps my small space about 88-95 degrees
