Silkie thread!

At what age can you expect a silkie to set? typically speaking.

Other than Leghorns, I watch my other breeds for signs from 6 months. Usually my Silkies got very agitated, consumed Oyster Shell, and were not interested in treats when they got the first urge to lay. Now I have one old Silkie that never does an egg song and a younger 2-year-old that's always been the loudest squawking egg singer of the whole flock both before and all day after she lays.

I'm haveing no luck on finding any silkie breeders in my area . I got two hatchery silkie blacks but I heard that hatchery and breeder silkies aren the same not as fluffy. Very disappointing :( so if any of you guys are from Boise, idaho area I'd be thrilled to buy some silkies .
Iv never bought chicks online so I'm very liery.

We keep a styptic pencil on hand if bleeding happens after trimming although we've never caused bleeding yet. And yes, it's annoying but every couple days we trim a bit more again. One old Silkie has the curliest toenails because she broods so much from tucking those toes and nails under her.

Question: Has anyone ever tried using the electric nail trimmers like the ones used on canines? I'm always afraid of splitting the brittle Silkie nails with ordinary hand clippers. Any input welcome!

I use a Dremel with a sanding tip lightly on the beak and toenails. They seem to like it better. I guess the noise soothes them. I keep it very low, and make sure that it doesn't get hot. I think those nail trimmers are pretty much like a Dremel.

I show a couple of times a year. Not that much, but a trimmed beak and nails is pretty much expected. Maybe not (?), but all of the competition have neat, trimmed beaks and nails.

I put a x-tra large metal dog food pan in the coop with the DE in it.
They play in it some, making a mess.

We tried a small dog house outside, but rain got in it and made concrete.

Lily loves the computer, and really loves Byc. She focused really hard on the moving chicken pictures. She is getting a lot better. Her sinus swelling has gone down almost completely. She will be a house silkie for a couple of weeks.

Searching for answers for her condition.

(she is very smart) It does take awhile to type only pecking one letter at a time though.
