Silkie thread!

Yes I am brutal honest when it comes to sexing chickens. I have a man picking up 2 x day old silkies this morning to keep his lone chick company. I've made it very clear that there is no way of sexing them and if they turn out to be Roos that he will have to rehome them. He's happy with that.

I don't mind raising from day-old chicks but because of the no-roo zoning I have to wait until breeds are juveniles before I invest now. You get too attached even to the juveniles when they turn out roos. I knew nothing about Silkies when the breeder gave us two Partridges chicks that a friend raised for me until we set up our coop. Within a couple weeks we realized one was a roo and the breeder took him back because she had made the mistake of identifying him as a pullet before I brought him home with his sister at 5 months. That was such a heartache that I won't get any chicks except the auto-sexing ones now.

Ok so my girl Lucy(white silkie)which is 8 almost 9 months finally laid me the first egg! I put a golf ball in her coop just for kicks and grins to see if it would work and what do you know it did! I'm super excited. My other hen that's black that I just recently got has been laying since 6 months but is still in quarantine. My boys has been trying to mate Lucy a lot. Do you thing the egg is fertile? I know nothing about all the but really want to incubate a few sometime or another. Let me know a little about the process if you can and your thoughts on my situation! Thanksn

I wouldn't ' throw the baby out with the water ' just yet. The spikes in crest look more like pin feathers to me. Could still be a hen, and I'm usually 50% correct on these things.

I'll take 50% :weee
That's better then 25%! It's not so much the looks but how it acts that makes me think boy. I sure hope I'm wrong.

I got a blue and black silkies and there sooo cute there only 7 weeks but are awesome i think my blue is a boy bc it loves to cuddle and its bigger a lot bigger and the black is skittish and its smaller and i held it more and it still is weird

I have a dozen eggs ready to ship. Need to go asap. $25 plus shipping. I cant hatch them, and I dont like tossing fertile eggs.

Are they silkie..dumb question?? I'm interested if so. :)

Any whites? Or splash?
