Silkie thread!

So all my chickies 4weeks-6mths and are all outside together now and the days are getting super hot. Its been like 98 degrees the last few days. I have put a huge tarp covering their entire run for shade and they always have water. They are always panting everytime I go check on them. Should I be concerned of heat stroke or anything or is this just a normal thing for chickies in summer? Anything I could do to make them more comfortable, or are they fine?

Don't add acv to the water in summer ( if you are an acv convert ) .In the heat of the day I pour frozen peas or strawberries in their water to keep it cool and gives them a nice cool snack. I hose the trees above mine and the water trickles down. Fill an old milk carton with water and freeze it to put in the water dish through the day.

Those are good ideas! I dont put anything in their water. I'll have to try the frozen pea idea. I thought about putting one of those misters out there, you know the ones that attach to a hose and lets out a fine mist but I wasent sure if I should actually let them get wet but maybe they'd like it :)

Hi Fancy Chook Lady,

Love the photos of your new babies. Don't you love that crazy stage of growth!!! Just as well we love them as looking the way they do at that time, not many others would!!!! But it just makes them cuter!! Here's a couple of photos of my brood too. The new coloured roo is fitting right in. What do they call his colour??? The Snow White silkie hen has two pur black Bubbas under her skirt. The other two are mother and daughter.:)

My silkies love watermelon & tomatoes that have been in the fridge too on hot days, In moderation of course

. Where I live in Australia it easily gets to 98f sometimes more and my silkies have been ok, just made sure the water was cool and in the shade and they had plenty of shade but they free-range and we have rainforest patches so they find their own spots

my cousins who had hundreds of chooks on a free range farm had a mister installed, obviously you wouldn't need a huge commercial one, and on the 104f + days it did them very well.

Hi Deb, yes we call it their ' awkward teenager' phase. I would say that your little guy is a ' calico '.
