Silkie thread!

Hi everyone. I'm very new to the chicken world. I have a frizzle silkie, a silkie, 2 sizzled silkies and a smooth sizzle rooster.

I need the rules on who to breed to what.
I know not to breed a sizzle to a sizzle or the feathers will be very brittle.

I think I understand that I can breed the smooth sizzle to the frizzle and I could get a mixture of all 4. Is there a thread that explains all this?

Thank you from Roseville California

You can breed sizzle to sizzle, just not Frizzled sizzles together. A smooth sizzle can be bred to a Frizzled sizzle though.
Ur post says a Frizzled Silkie and sizzled silkies. :/ I'm confused by that. The 4 types u get when breeding sizzles are
1 Silkie
2 Frizzled Silkie
3 smooth sizzle
4 Frizzled sizzle

I don't trim mine, but you can, if you aren't planning on showing. Feathers don't grow like hair does. Once you trim them, they don't grow back. They have to fall out to grow back. Like say during a molt. So if you decide to trim make sure you are committed, or you be plucking or waiting for a molt for them to regrow. As long as they can see to get around, and you aren't seeing irritation to the chicks eyes, I would just let them be for now. The feathers may not be fully emerged from their casings yet since they are so young. You could tape the crests, but I'm not sure what you could do to keep the beards out of the eyes other than trimming.

Thank you. I'll leave them alone then. It's just amazing how they can see at all. When I hold them, I always mess with their face and crest. My last Silkie hated me touching her crest. So this time I made sure they got used to it early on. I part their beard down away from their eyes and push their crest up with my finger, and their eyes get real big. They look around like it's the first time they saw the great outdoors. Lol.

When you hatch a chick with a vaulted skull, how long is it before their bones form around their brain to protect it? I have five babies that were born with vaults, a few that were huge! And I need to integrate them with the teenagers. But I don't want them to get hurt.

I find that by the time they reach 10-12 weeks I can hardly tell them apart from the un vaulted.

So they are 5 weeks old today. I need to start integrating them with the teenagers (4 months old) real soon. I'm leaving on the 13th for vacation and I was hoping they would be one big happy family by then. In Ct it's been a really cool summer. In the 60s at night. They are in my house still and have been without a heat lamp for a week. When do you think it would be safe to put them out? All my teenagers are cool with them except one. Chaos the little red roo seemed a little aggressive with them the few times I let them all out on grass to meet. He grabbed some feathers and tried to peck. Oooh did that make me mad! He may be regimes soon because the 7 teenagers I got from Bobbi, I think 5 are going to be boys!

Some supervised day visits over the next week or so should give you an indication. I usually introduce mine to the silkie flock between 6-8 weeks.
