Silkie thread!

Just ordered my silkie eggs lastnight! Will be setting 6-8 on Friday (depends how many of them make it in shipment) I already have 10 eggs set of my current flock of Sussex and Sussex mixes. 7/10 are developing and 3 not sure. Can't wait to have babies around! At what age do silkies usually start to go broody? Just wondering if I can expect silkies that hatch out to go broody next summer or after they are a year old.

I've had silkies go broody from 5 month old to a little over a year old. I've had a few that went broody before they ever laid. It just depends on the Silkie. My very docial and always wanna be held silkies, tend to brood early and often. So I take special care with holding my babies and getting them use to me ASAP.

IKR! I thought I was hallucinating. Lol

You do wonder that!

Okay, great! I plan on using them to hatch out my other breeds used for meat/eggs. And of course more silkies! So there is a chance they will go broody next spring then. I've never had a broody hen before...they just lay flat on a nest? Or how do you tell the difference of a broody hen and a hen who is just taking awhile to lay. I used to think my Sussex was going broody but turns out she jsut likes sitting on the nest for an hour after she lays her egg.

Beware the broody Silkie disease! If one gets it usually all them do. I had 4 hens share a egg crate nesting box and hatched 15 babies! They shared mothering duty lol

EPP I cant say about your chick.s .by 4 1/2 months one of my roos had a good sized comb and then crowed but the black guy didnt have a big comb but was bigger than the rest...However a couple weeks later about 5 months he crowed so then i knew for sure.
My point you dont have too long to wait and youll know
And crowing at 5 weeks id be in shock! Glad i see it can happen
