Silkie thread!

I have a question for everyone. I have 2 silkie chicks, age 4 weeks 4 days. One of the two has gotten a bit aggressive lately which makes me suspect he's a roo. Now, knowing that silkies are notoriously confusing and difficult to sex, I figured that time will tell. So last night they were both making a ruckus in their brooder and I went to go see what all the fuss was about. They were playing (which was adorable to watch!!) but they'd take turns running from each other and then running at each other. The one that's gotten a bit aggressive made spurring motions at the other when they ran at each other. So I watched for awhile and it happened several times. Thoughts? Would a female do that during play? Cuz I was thinking it would be more of an instinctual thing, which would be a male trait. I'd also like any advice on curbing the aggression. I adore him and would like to keep him but with little kids I don't dare. TIA :)

Sustained

  • I have 4 week old babies 4 bantam cochins and 9 silkies. A few were doing the same thing and those 5 were larger than the others. So last week I seperated the aggressive from the small calmer ones. That way the big ones wouldnt run the others over with there ruckus. It calmed both brooders down. They still flapped at each other but it was fine. I do suspect roos as they are larger but time will tell. I just put them outside with a heat lamp today, just too much stinkiness. I will miss my office friends, I had a few that would chill on my office chair while i worked. Those are my favorites and got lots of meal worms. If I can get them to feed out of my hand early on, it seems they are nicer as adults. I wouldnt worry about an agressive chick just yet but that me.

It took me a while to get my photos downloaded from my camera, but here's my favorite Silkie, Ginger / Gingy. Based upon what I've seen of adult Silkies, I have a feeling she may be a he, but it's hard to tell, especially at only 3 weeks of age. This is the only one with pink on the forehead/comb area. Gingy is also the sweetest and least flighty of my Silkies. The other two wouldn't even hold still long enough for a photo.

When my two Silkie females were hormonal I saw them jump 4 feet mid-air at each other squawking with feet flying at each other so I would say, Yes, male or female can fly and claw at each other.

So my new found rooster Percy has attempted to start crowing. The 1st couple of days I though someone was dying until I figured out what was happening. It's hilarious but he won't do it when I am in the room. I am trying to record it
