Silkie thread!

Anyone know a rough guess at what age Silkie chicks get their voice? Like no longer peeping but sounding more like a hen or a roo? My two babies are 10 weeks old and still peep, while my other 10 week olds (different breeds) are clucking like hens. Is this any indication that they are roos? Or just more slow to develop?

my roo started crowing at 5 months but stopped making chick sounds at about 4 months, I think it varies from bird to bird though

can anyone tell me if there is a tendency for silkies to just drop dead? I mean more than any other breed? I've heard somewhere that some meat birds were known for that, sudden heart attacks. I found my best hen dead last evening when I went to close up the coop. She was on her side her heck was arched and bent and her eyes were shut. She was healthy as far as I could tell, she had laid an egg that day as usual. There were some guys doing yard work with a small digger which I suspect scared her causing a heart attack. Because nothing makes sense.

Thank you! I have three others and two might be roosters as well. I'll really have a tough time choosing which one to keep! :'(

I can sympathize. I'm in the suburbs and am going to try keeping a roo but I don't want to push my luck with more than one. I'm not even sure my neighbors will tolerate one yet. I have 3 silkie chicks so far and I adore them all. It's going to be heartbreaking to give any up if I have more than one roo.

I've got couple of questions which I wanted to ask here. I have a pair of white silkie but the male I have is a Single combed male and female is a walnut combed.
Question1. Is It okay to breed a single comb with a walnut combed? What offspring will I get after crossing them?
Question2. Female silkie is a bearded one and she's facing a lot of problems. She can't see properly because of the beard. What should I do with her beard? I'm not planning to show her, just for breeding.

Has anyone tried the new No-Crow Rooster Collar. I found it on Mypetchicken.com and was thinking of using it for the roo I choose. I am not supposed to have a roo but I have heard a few tips that might keep there crow at bay. One was to not let the birds out till 10 am or at least don’t let the roo out till later. Another was to house the roo in the garage every night. I read that the one roo will wait at the garage door for its owner to put him up. Then I found the No-crow collar. I think I may try this if I end up with a few roos and can’t choose

I got a free flock of hatchery Silkies a few weeks ago. The mamma is white and the roo was black (but had been given away before I got them). Mamma's babies are black with flecks of brown or white/silver in the neck/chest area. I will try to get some pictures this weekend, but I was wondering what the genetics of this may be. I know white obscures other color genetics, so it could a crap shoot.

I didn't know if the black Silkies would lighten up into whatever color is appearing on their chest, whether it is brown, buff, gold, or white.

I've read a lot about it and read all the reviews I can find. Sounds like how well it works depends on the specific roo. But I don't know how tight everyone was putting them on or any of that. Everyone was saying they could fit their pinky underneath but that's kind of subjective. I know with cat or dog collars that can mean many different things as far as being able to fit 2 fingers underneath. Some it just means they can get 2 fingers in there, others they can squeeeeeeze two fingers underneath the collar, others it's snug with 2 fingers under it. I think the no crow collar may be similar. Just my thoughts on it though. It also seems to be more effective if it's used on a new crower rather than one that's been enjoying the sounds of it's own voice for a little while. Anyway, I haven't tried it but am going to give it a shot. And if it doesn't work out or I'm afraid I'd have to put it on too tight I will just wait and see if the neighbors start yelling out their window like they do when I'm doing anything noisy in the yard :)
