In May, I received an order of chicks from Ideal Poultry that included four white Silkies. I was hoping for at least one that would become a broody hen. Now that they are a week away from turning seven months old it appears that all four are pullets and that one may already be broody. Tonight three are up on their roost for the night while the other is in one of the nests. Previously all four would roost together. Also, I did not see the fourth pullet outside in their pen today, just in the nest. The four Silkies are separated from the larger chickens.

I would like to give her some fertile eggs to sit on from the flock of New Hampshire pullets of the same age who are with our only New Hampshire rooster, BC, who is four years old.

How many full size eggs should I give her? How long should I wait to be sure she is broody?

I would only give her two and see how she does, new Broodies can easly leave them out from under her sitting right beside them expechally at night and expechally if she has to many. Best of luck.

Thanks. She apparently decided that she wasn't ready so I didn't give her any eggs and we took away the four Silkie eggs she sat on for a day and night. I thought that she was too young.

What is a good number of eggs that a Silkie can cover? She is a second time broody, first time sat on 4 eggs (she did kick them out from under her a lot) and 3 hatched. Unfortunately her first time the chicks died because she was so busy guarding her nest and the chicks I think she forgot to teach them about eating and drinking(my mistake for not catching it). Its her second go around and I gave her 5 Silkie eggs and plan to watch her much better and help her teach the chicks after hatch. Is 5 a reasonable number of eggs for her?
