Silkie thread!

On the last one, the boy, we've had to trim his crest a few times already because I was worried that he couldn't see properly haha. He's used to it now, he closes his eyes and waits patiently for us when I catch him :D
I've had two Silkies for over 3 years and never needed to trim their fluffy crests. For some reason if they free-range they manage to gently nibble "eye tunnels" for each other. It's the funniest thing they do for each other and just gently around the eyes. At first I thought it was aggressive feather-picking but after 3 years I found this is just a nice little thing they do for each other. We had an aggressive Marans that picked our Partridge completely bald before we realized the poor little Silkie wasn't molting but being picked bald by the Marans on the roost. The Marans was re-homed since she was vicious to the Silkies. One of the Silkies manages to get spider webs, straw, and dirt into her crest. Sometimes she looks like a bride wearing a hair wreath of weed strands. Amazingly in a day or so the crest fluffs out again. If a crest gets matted too much I'll use a damp washcloth to clean the stuff out of the fluff. Even after foraging in muddy rain the Silkies manage to look all clean and fluffy again by the following morning. I chose not to have white Silkies because when we had a White Leghorn her beautiful white got stained and yellowed so much from foraging and dust baths so we went with a Partridge and a Black color for our Silkies.

Okay, That's good to know! I used to have 2 hens and they made a lot of noise like bok bok b-cawk (mostly when they were about to lay eggs) and cute whiny sounds

but if silkies only make quiet cooing sounds then that's perfect!

I have two very different Silkie hens. The Partridge is a sweet dainty quiet little girl. I've never heard anything but cooing from her except when she does the barnyard alert for a predator. She doesn't even do an egg song. However the Black Silkie is very noisy and complains a lot before she lays an egg and afterwards too. If we have treats the Partridge quietly runs up to us but the Black Silkie comes running and squawking across the yard. Who knew the same breed could be so different as individuals?

I'm not sure if I'm doing this right it's my first time on this website. I do know I'm excited to talk to some silkie lovers because I'm obsessed with my silkies!

LOL! I just found out that my Silkies like to run in the rain. Here I am busting my hump to set up additional shelter from the rain and turn around to find my one Silkie pullet and two cockerels showering, preening, and having an all-around good time in the rain while the rest of my flock (Australorps and Barred Rocks) watch them silently from the safe, dry environment of the coop. I was so amused watching them that I forgot I was getting drenched standing out in the rain.

Do silkie Roos make decent protectors for the hens?

One of my Silky cockerels is already VERY protective of my Silky female as well as of one of my Barred Rock females. He's as sweet as can be with me, but puffs up like a prize fighter if anything threatens his favorite girls and will stand between then and any perceived danger. My other Silkie cockerel doesn't seem to know that the girls even exist...and they're both only 11 weeks old! So I guess the potential is there, but personality is a variable.

Ok! Thank you very much!!!! I've been wanting a silkie, but we don't have much more room in the coop, and we need a rooster. :)
