Silkie thread!

Happy babies! I always try to get mothers to share chicks. We hatch year round and the more mothers, the warmer and safer the chicks are. Occasionally one broody might pull rank and kick the other mother out, but that's few and far between. A team takes some of the stress away. I let my mothers raise babies out with my flock of 100+ chickens, and I've never had a flock member kill a baby. They may just be used to always having siblings around?? Hundreds of chicks and a few years in and they're all still kicking. Lol

Sure makes sense on the mommy sharing! But my hens never liked having other momma's around! I can't count how many fights I've had to break up! One of the momma's would have feathers sticking out of her beak and I'd say: "Look? You even have the evidence in your beak that you were whooping up on her! Shame on you!" She didn't care to say the least! Just clucked at me!

I haven't been here for a while but news flash!! I went on vaca to the xgames and when I came back my little black silkie pepper was missing so i asked the people that were watching them and they said she was in the pen that night well she was but not alive she was dead under the straw and I have no idea how she died but she was the runt and I tried my best to take care of her but she was fun blue was sad but he has his other girlfriend salt ( a white silkie i got a few months ago)

Very sorry you lost her, I hate leaving and worring about someone else looking after my chickens and other critters.

Is it just my girls, or is broodiness contagious? They have insisted on sitting all Winter long, no matter how many times I tried to break them! I finally relented, and from the three that started brooding, the new hatches now have about eight mommies telling them what to do! Poor things are never going to get away with anything lol!

Thanks everyone. The little chick seems OK, all Tapioca will let me see is two little yellow feet standing under her. Another chick hatched, a BR/barnyard mix. I removed that shell and decided to not move them until tomorrow when I have the day off. DH will be home by noon today and can check on them then.

The third egg hatched so there are two little black BR/barnyard mix chicks and the slightly larger and much more active NH. That yellow chick shows no lasting effects from its first day adventure. :)

The move to a floor nest went well but Tapioca and the chicks move around the coop floor. The first day and evening with the other Silkies and the month old chicks went well. We will see how things are today. Hope I do not need to separate them.
