Silkie thread!

On another note. The pullet I've been trying to tend to stood up today. She was in my lap and it was just after a bath that she stood up. She was leaned against the towel but she still did it. She stood several more times before it was time for her last feeding. She didn't want to feed herself so I tube fed her. Last winter I had a young porcelain cockerel that I had to tube feed. I don't know what was wrong other than he wasn't eating. I fed him for about 2 months before he started feeding himself. He is now a big healthy roo. He may have suffered a brain injury because he still gets off balance, he has never crowed and has no interest in breeding. But he loves babies. So he's great to have in the juvenile pen to look after the youngsters.

I hope it's ok if I post here and join the discussion! I'm new to silkies! I've admired them from afar for 15 years! What took me so long, I do not know. I just bought my first ones today! They are bantams. I don't really know a lot about chickens but I love them! Here's a pic! And there are three that I was told were silkies but I'm not 100% sure!

I have this happen from time to time. Most recently was this winter. Although he's not quite a cockerel anymore he hasn't been with his girls a year yet. He became aggressive so what I did is I forced him to be cuddled. Everytime I went outside I caught him and cuddled. He finally came around after a few weeks. He was not raised to be close to people. I did handle him but not like I would to make him a pet. His intention was for breeding.
That was my first idea for dealing with it. I read it somewhere a long time ago. Probably on this site.

Hi. One here is a non silkie hen. The 2 silkies look like roos. I had 2 roos and a hen who lived together fine. One roo would mount the other sometimes but aside from that it was fine. I hope others are like that. Anyone know if silkie roos can live together?

I agree, the 2 silkies are roos. I don't normally put 2 roos in a pen especially with just 1 hen. The hen can really get hurt if the roos are trying to establish which one is the dominant roo. It could go smoothly too. The only way to find out is to try it. The only way I have more than 1 boy per pen is in the juvenle pen. When they get breeding age I either separate them till I can get them sold or they get sold right away. I have 4 boys now that have been separated all winter. I'm glad spring is here so I can finally sell them.

Yes the silkies are both Roos and the red combed one is not silkie. On the issue of aggressive Roos, once the hormones kick in they change their colours completely . I pick them up and carry them round whilst I feed everyone and when I'm ready I put him down. I think that to avoid the indignity of being paraded around in front of everyone again , they learn to avoid you. Now I only have to stomp my foot and they know I mean business. I've only had 1 aggressive silkie roo and he is my oldest . He now has a healthy understanding of the lady with the food bucket . I have 17 Roos so it's important for me to have some control.

I just got home late last night but I have another white silkie or at least I was told it was a silkie hen. I'll have to get a pic. I'll have to post a pic of the non silkie in the, what breed is this thread! Thanks so much! I will definetly keep the roos separated!
