Silkie thread!

I have heard plain old Vaseline on the legs suffocates those guys on the Chicken
as far as in the coop or yard I am not sure.
anyone else?
Vaseline does work to suffocate the actual mites living inside the legs, I've had to deal with that too! It's a pain in the butt to deal with if the bird had fathered legs though. As for coop, I used one dose of 7 dust to get rid of a good portion of the the population, then killed the rest off with DE. My run still had mites, but they dust bathe in DE, and their coop is mite free so I don't worry about it.

Oh that horse fly spray stuff is like a flea bomb on my dogs

I agree that using any powdered substance or dust around chickens can be an issue. I had Leghorns who notoriously sneezed for an hour just from a dust bath in the yard. For lice/mites we use organic Manna Pro Poultry Protector on both the hens and the nestboxes/perches/crevices in the coop. The product really works and can be used on chicks as young as 9 days. Complete instructions for use on coop or chickens is on the label and is safe enough to use as often as necessary to eliminate parasites. I used it to spray ants going after a broken egg in the nestbox and felt safe using it as it instantly immobilized the ants while I cleaned the mess. I used it on an 8-day chick (but used a Q-tip rather than spraying the chick). I use it once a month as routine maintenance on the hens and coop. I use it to spray under the beard and neck of my crested and muffed breeds, etc. If ants go after your feed bowls it's safe to spray the floor before putting down the feed dish. It has so many safe uses that I started buying extra to keep on hand.

We used vaseline on the legs and combs of our chickens. The mess greased up the chickens' feathers so bad and permanently stained our white Leghorn's feathers when she dust-bathed - we had to wait til her next molt to turn white again! My vet suggested using Vitamin A or Vitamin E oil rather than vaseline. The Vitamin oils can be massaged into the feathers of the legs as well as on the toes, toenails, beaks, and combs of chickens. We use a Q-tip dipped in Vit E on the face of one Silkie that gets dry skin around her nostrils to the point she has trouble keeping her eyes fully open. The chickens love the massage and my hands are very soft after treating them. In the morning instead of sticky vaseline crest feathers or greasy stomach feathers the birds are free of any greasy sticky feathers and the vitamin oil prevents frostbite on combs and legmite prevention on feathered feet (we have 3 feather-footed breeds out of 4 chickens!). We give these vitamin treatments once a month. The Silkie face gets treated every week. Bless my vet!
