Silkie thread!

I moved my broody silkie today to a pen with food and water to make sure she gets enough if each. She is so thin! I bet she would of just sat in those eggs till she died!

If I didn't catch a particular silkie of ours eating and drinking, I would have believed she would have sat there till she died...it was almost 3mths, anytime someone laid an egg, she jumped on it, we tried to collect them ASAP but she'd hide them! LOL I wonder how long they would stay there...

Not a breed. I'm asking if someone has ever been able to breed correctly to get a silkie looking bird that lays colored eggs. There are such things as bantam EEs I've heard. I believe either Meyer or Mcmurray sells them
I have a bantam EE hen, I got her from Muray Mc Murray, I don't know if Meyer has them but Murray does. I've never crosses my EE hen with a silkie.

I have one that's been doing that for 4 months, lol, I finally had to let her because she lost a lot of weight and looked a little rough, (she hatched 6 buff Orpington chicks! :) )

I've only lost one to splayed legs. No matter how firm I placed the bandaid the little blighter would pull his leg free. Sadly we had to euthanize him. Others have only had the taping on for 48 hours and I honestly can't pick them out in the crowd.
Now all of my chicks are checked over on day 1 for any leg , feet or beak issues.
They are also much easier to handle when they are freshly hatched.

I use a band-aid and I also take a toothpick and break it into little pieces, and tape the pieces in line with the bones on the toe, it's worked better for me then just a bandaid. I had one hen that I thought I was going to have to put down when it was 2 days old, because it had a serious leg issue (it's toes were in a ball) but I taped it and she's all better I named her "Gimpy" and only way I can tell her apart is I put a band on her foot that was a different color then the rest of the chickens. :)

I've moved away from band aids and prefer medical tape. A tooth pick could be dangerous if the chick is out with momma. The legs are so fine that I haven't found ' splinting ' necessary . Toes are relatively easy to correct, once again, only if you catch it early. Vitamin supplements are also part of the treatment , especially with curled toes.
