Silkie thread!

A vaulted skull is a hole or unclosed portion of bone in the top portion of the Silkie’s skull. This genetic trait was introduced into Silkies via crosses with the Crested Polish breed of chickens. The Polish were bred into Silkies to improve and create a larger crest size. Since there is an opening in the Silkie’s skull, it can allow a portion of the brain to protrude through the opening. It’s not as bad as it sounds, cause it’s covered with skin and feathers. However… it causes the chick to be quite delicate. If the Silkie chick gets pecked on the head or bumps it’s head, it can die instantly. Chicks with vaulted heads should be protected and handled as gently as possible, as they are more vulnerable. As the chick grows, this hole will usually grow shut or at least get smaller. Occasionally though it does not. Usually chicks with vaulted skills will have fuller crests when full grown! The chick in the middle is not vaulted:
Thanks for clearing that up for me. Would this one be vaulted? It doesn't matter if it is or not, I'm just curious.

the last of the two silkie chicks that hatched last week. the other chick got out of it's rabbit hutch that it was living in with it's sibling and mom, and the older chickens killed it. I wasn't home when it happened, but I'm pretty sure that's what happened, because that chick was adventurous and always strayed off(unlike the other one who stays close to mom) and the older chickens kill and eat pretty much anything, frogs, mice, snakes, just to name a few, so a chick would be an easy snack. So I moved the two to a different cage outside the main coop, and blocked any and all small holes.

Such a cute little chick Rocky64!

Ok so I guess the hubster and I are going on a road trip this weekend for some frizzle silkies?!
