Silkie thread!

I have a beautiful young black Silkie pullet, a few months old and this week she started acting really strangely.  I was trying to figure out what was wrong with her.  She was standing in the corner of the brooder, only drinking, I did not see her eat.  The 3 other Silkies were not picking on her or anything.  Her crest had come in so full that I started to realize she was totally blind!  I could barely find her eyes in all that fluff.  I tried to trim it but my scissors are useless, so with some aloe I slicked back her crest.  She is starting to eat a bit now.  She was drinking a ridiculous amount of water just because she knew where it was.  Poor girl!  I knew the crest could affect eye sight, but never thought it could make a bird completely blind!

I don't think you should post your age on BYC. I think it's actually against the rules for minors to.

Had to do that with my polish. She would get so lost and be off by herself. Just put a mini band on her and she was a different bird. She eventually pulled it off or one of the others did but she seems to still be doing ok.

I've seen birds personalities change dramatically , once they can see. If you aren't showing silkies , a light trim will make all the difference to the the birds wellbeing.

The mix I've got, "her" neck feathers are slightly darker then your darker bird's feathers.

the white silkie whose rear is facing the camera, I thought that was its head, and I was thinking "wow, that is a MASSIVE crest!

Thanks silkiecuddles! Still chuckling about the white ones rear being mistaken for the crest! Funny! That cat is my baby. He is a lilac Siamese. Talks all of the time!

Thanks! I have had Siamese cats since I was a little girl & my mom fell in love with them! She loved animals like I do. These silkie chickens are so sweet to. Just finished vaccinating 13 of my babies for Marek's today & glad that is done for the year!!

Has anyone bred any Sultan\silkie mixes? I have a silkie pullet (Buff) and a sultan cockerel; (both 5 months old) does anyone have any pics of the outcome? thanks!

Thanks! I have had Siamese cats since I was a little girl & my mom fell in love with them! She loved animals like I do. These silkie chickens are so sweet to. Just finished vaccinating 13 of my babies for Marek's today & glad that is done for the year!!

I love Siamese as well. But I don't have any. So I'll just enjoy the pics of yours
