Silkie thread!

Does anyone have any ideas on how to encourage silkies to not brood? because my silkies keep trying to brood and they've lost weight because they won't leave the nest. And it's too late in the year to hatch chicks.

I have one sitting on eggs right now, and I tried to get her off for a few days but finally gave up. I gave her a few eggs and have put her in a coop by herself with food and water and plenty of room to take care of her other needs, but I do worry about the cold now. I never would have imagined one would go broody this late in the year, but what can you do? I would just keep putting yours out with the others just so she can eat and drink at least. Once they have it in their heads to brood it can be difficult to stop them.

Best way I've solved this is giving them a few eggs to hatch. I've had some hatch eggs in winter with snow on the ground and they've been fine. I just make sure to keep them in a place where the winds won't blow on them either locking them in the coop or a well protected run which they have access to. Sadly I don't have any fertile eggs at the moment

What I've done in the past with other breeds it take them off the nest for ten minutes and not let them back on so they can eat and drink. If I don't want any chicks at the time get them off the nest then take the eggs.

Some believe that placing them in a small cage that has air circulation all round will help. Silkies are notoriously known for their broodiness and I've found that even if I take them off the nest and remove the eggs they will return to the nest at the first opportunity and sit on ' fresh air ' , a golf ball , a rock , ......................
Sooo , I put them to work . The silkies here have hatched out most of my large fowl and I have been able to put the incubator into storage. :)
