Silkie thread!

Yep, this is a rough time of year to get eggs.  You'll have plenty of opportunities come Spring.  I'm glad to see you are tenacious about chickeneering in spite of setbacks.  I have one Silkie that's broody and one that can't stop laying right now!  Go figure? Hardy little buggers - this breed!

Hardy for sure ! Yesterday we had the hottest Xmas day on record for Tassie. 38 degrees Celsius. The humans were feeling it and lucky we live on the river , but my poor birds were suffering. 5 new chicks hatched and the last of the teenagers were picked up this morning. Lovely gentle rain all day today. :)

it rained all day here as well. my poor banties have been shut up in the coop for a week. the reason being they can't run with the big Chickens so they run in a portable pen. but i keep them in the main coop at night and when it rains. but it's been raining for a week so they haven't gotten much outside time.

Hello fellow silkie people! I've been searching but am not quite sure of the best route for this. I've had silkies for awhile, but for the first time I think I'm in need of a chicken saddle for one of my girls. My two roos seem to like her best, specially since the other girls are busy tending to their babies.... they aren't as keen to cater to the boys. Her lack of feathers does not seem to be due to mites or anything of the sort so it seems safe bet it's to overly eager boys. She has been separated, but seeing as her feathers may not grow back in until next molt, it seems best bet would be a saddle. That way she can still be with everyone. Long story short...... any suggestions of best places to get silkie sized "riding gear" hahahaha

Don't separate the hens - separate the boys LOL! You don't want multiple boys wearing out just one available hen regardless of whether she has a saddle or not!

We keep getting warnings of heavy El Nino rainstorms in Jan-Mar so if our patio roof over the coop isn't finished by the contractor by then I don't know where we'll keep our Silkies to keep them out of the mud and cold! I may wind up with a couple house Silkies for the duration but I hate separating them from the main flock!

Yep , agree. It is much easier to lock the boys up for a while. My girls have been having a ' break ' from the boys for over a month now. Saddle or no saddle, if the roo to hen ratio is too high the hen will eventually suffer health wise.
