Silkie thread!

Hah, I once had a Black Silkie cockerel (hatchery stock) named Lucifer. Oh how I hated that bird. He was flighty as heck and would do nothing but harass my hens. I saw him try to steal chicks only a few weeks old from broody hens and MOUNT them. Not attack them, but actually try to mate with them. He climbed into a bush last winter during a bad storm and froze to death. I cannot say I was sad to see him go...

The Black Silkies seem to be the spunkiest of the Silkie varieties from all the Silkie BYC posts I've been following for years. My Black hen is the spunkiest and silliest (always has cobwebs in her "hair"). The Black hen has been more dominant than either the Partridge hen or Partridge cockerel I had - but she's not been mean -- just very very active.

SILLY BUSY BLACK SILKIE WITH COBWEBS

THE SWEET CALM PARTRIDGE HEN PREFERS TO STAY AWAY FROM THE SPUNKIER BLACK HEN.

ODD COMPANIONS - THE PARTRIDGE SILKIE AND BLUE WHEATEN AMERAUCANA - OUR TWO GENTLEST BIRDS. CAN'T SAY ENOUGH ABOUT THE SWEET NATURE OF OUR AMERAUCANA TOWARDS HER FLOCKMATES. I SUPPOSE THERE CAN BE AMERAUCANA STINKERS BUT OUR GIRL IS JUST SO VERY KIND AND NON-COMBATIVE.

WHILE THE GENTLE PARTRIDGE SILKIE STAYS SECLUDED IN THE DOGHOUSE THE SPUNKY BLACK SILKIE AND BUSY BLUE BREDA TOODLE AROUND AS ODD COMPANIONS -- COMPETING FOR BUGS AND STEALING FROM EACH OTHER LIKE A GAME! THESE TWO ARE A REAL MATCH AS FAR AS ACTIVE PERSONALITIES. YOU WOULD THINK THE TWO SILKIES WOULD BE BEST BUDDIES BUT IT'S NEVER BEEN THAT WAY WITH OUR TWO SILKIE HENS. I'VE CONSIDERED THE BLACK SILKIES MIGHT HAVE SOMETHING IN THEIR ANCESTRY THAT MAKES THEM MORE ASSERTIVE THAN THE OTHER SILKIE VARIETIES?

Awe so cute!

Any Suggestions..how to rehome him? There are few Silkie people around here. Aria

Good luck about re-homing cockerels of ANY breed. There is a show quality breeder near me that gives away all her cockerels free for the taking with no questions asked about what the customer does with them - sad - but that's the reality of having unwanted cockerels. I was lucky enough to have a chickeneer who rescues unwanted cockerels and battery hens. Not something I'm inclined do myself but it gave us a place to re-home a gorgeous pure-breed sweet cockerel Breda that we couldn't keep. He became their favorite indoor-outdoor house chicken! Not every cockerel re-homed is that lucky - many go to soup pots and that's the reality of buying straight-run chicks or hatching eggs.

Hi have a sick silkie chick. Was wondering if you could help me in diagnosing it?

I have respected the vast knowledge @casportpony has regarding symptoms or treatments of sick chickens and might be a valuable resource if you PM her. @Fancychooklady is very knowledgeable about Silkies in particular but you'll have to give symptoms to get any informative advice.

Trying to rehome a few silkie roos as well. We actually do butcher most of our roos but Silkies are so small that if we can rehome even for a few $'s I would rather do that. They are so precious.

I also try to re-home silkies I will NOT butcher them. They're too precious.

Thanks for the endorsement, but I live on a farm where we breed horses, rear goats ,cattle and several breeds of chickens, so I hope I've learnt a little more than silkie care. ;)
I have a ' hands on ' approach because it's not always possible to get a vet out in the country. :)
