Silkie thread!

Calico is a work in progress with few serious breeders and no agreed upon working standard. Since calico is a splash bird showing autosomal red, it's offspring will always inherit a blue gene. Exactly what gene or genes cause autosomal red has no complete agreement among those interesting in or researching poultry genetics. From experience, offspring are likely to inherit.

Mixing colours indiscriminately may give you colourful birds, but they will carry a mish mash of genes that will be difficult to replicate.

How did learn all about genetics? Your are the genetic guru!! Too bad I can't understand it LOL I'm taking biology this year so I might learn something.

Just wanted to share that I brought my Silkies to our county fair (yes, I know it's a dinky little thing, but it still counts to me) and took home Best Hen, Best Rooster, Best of Show, and 1st Place Showmanship. I'm very pleased. I also had a long conversation with the judge at the end and got to ask questions, get some good tips, and tons of compliments. Super day all around! I also helped with some newbies who needed Showmanship help and volunteered to bring various birds to their full-handed owners. I'm so proud of my birds and I gave them a nice strawberry salad afterwards; very well deserved for their patience in this 92* heat. But man, I'm bushed. Just too hyped up to sleep.

I cannot wait for the state fair.

Congratulations to you on your 1st (of many) blue ribbons! Now that you have your first show under your belt, hopefully, they'll all be a little easier.
Good luck to you with your silkies.

Since genetics have been brought up regarding new and unique colors, I'd like to know if anyone has experience with white birds carrying Lavender genetics? I traded another BYC'r some handmade items for her Christmas gifts, and in return she shipped me some gorgeous white silkies (splits) out of a Lavender sire. Since white has 'masking' (I think that's the right term) and other genes both dominant/recessive, what would these produce when bred back to another split or Lavender? What would white split x white split produce? I'm just wondering because you only hear about blk or blue splits?? Would love to learn more about this particular color cross, the genetics, and what may or may not be produced ect.
