Silkie thread!

Ok just making sure I was told something about silkies cant get wet ...

I've heard that over and over again but it doesn't seem to be an issue- at least not for me in my climate. I have 7 adults silkies plus half a dozen of this year's babies. We live in TN so not terribly cold weather. Nothing but rain this summer - downpours every other day. The silkies have a dry coop they can go into whenever they want - plus a large dry covered area outside that they can hang out in. But they seldom do. They've looked like drownded rats all summer but everyone is healthy. The moms kept the babies dry when they were small but now the 3-4 months olds get as wet as the adults do. I haven't had lost anyone or even had a sick one this year. Last winter I worried- it is as likely to rain as snow in January and we get into single digits a couple of the coldest nights.. But silkies were fine- running around in 40 degree rain. No matter how cold, they wanted to be out in it and seemed happy and well. The coop is dry and out of the wind and there are a bunch of chickens to snuggle together - silkies plus 6 large fowl and I worry less than I used to.

I'm still worried about the sneaky flying chick...I can't put out netting because the yard is too big..plus she is out all day..and needs to keep out of danger..I gave her a time out today but that didn't work...any suggestions???

Could anyone help me with what colour my silkie is please? It looks like I have a few more in a recent hatch that are this colour too?

From the neck down it looks lavender to me. Some of my lavenders have some black tail feathers but I have not seen one with a black head. Did it start as a chipmunk striped chick?

Based partly on the baby pictures it seems like a variation on partridge to me- probably GRAY partridge or less likely just a very light partridge. Grays often have a darker head. Am I seeing a pattern on the wings? Some grays have a bit of tan or reddish, especially in the neck or wing area, some don't.

she's only 5 or 5 1/2 months isn't that to early???

I've never had either of my pullets get hormonal that early but some owners have claimed they had pullets start laying that early. I think the average is after 6 months but your Freddie Mac is in the ballpark age-wise. Who knows with Silkies?
