Silkie thread!

Can someone please help me this silkie has been having some issues standing she drags her left foot behind her but she hasn't been injured as far as I know!! she eats and drink I started an antibiotic in case it was a illness so idk what to do!!! the is no vet around me that see's chickens

As for that silkie laying the egg or not... for me a good indicator is when my girls do the mating squat when i go near or reach out for them.

Also measure between end of breast bone and pelvic bone with fingers.

There should be a post somewhere here describing whether your hen is going to lay or not or if its a male.

Try and find it later.

Cheers

Sounds like Mareks.

  • Classical Marek's disease or neurolymphomatosis causes asymmetric paralysis of one or more limbs. With vagus nerve involvement, difficulty breathing or dilation of the crop may occur. Besides lesions in the peripheral nerves, there are frequently lymphomatous infiltration/tumours in the skin, skeletal muscle, visceral organs. Organs that are commonly affected include the ovary, spleen, liver, kidneys, lungs, heart, proventriculus and adrenals.

I have one of my silkies that walks with a limp but that's because a goose hurt her leg she's getting better I have her in a pen by herself

She may have hurt her leg jumping down from the perch, but just to be safe I would start her on a good poultry multi vitamin that contains thiamine :)because the earliest symptom of wryneck is ataxia in one or both legs. The other possibility is bumble foot , a staph infection on the underside of the foot. Have good look at her feet. :)

I know I haven't been on here awhile but I thought I'd announce my parting from BYC and chickens on my favorite thread. Unfortunately, I've been dealt two very bad cards: toxoplasmosis and mareks. The two diseases infected my flock this summer and after months of researching and trying to identify the mysterious disease (then unknown) I got a necropsy done on one and it revealed toxoplasmosis and mareks. Both are untreatable and cause tumors in the brain. Due to this, I will have to put down my entire flock and never get chickens again. I mainly wrote this post to thank everyone on BYC who have helped me over my 9 years of chicken keeping. This forum is incredible and a great resource for both new and old chicken owners. Hope everyone enjoys raising chickens for years to come! They are truly incredible animals with such unique and diverse personalities, especially my favorites, silkies. Best wishes everyone and may your flock be happy and healthy always! Thank you

That is heart breaking news. I can't even begin to imagine how you feel. I hope that you can find it in your heart to remain on BYC and perhaps share your experiences. Perhaps in the future you will be able to have a small flock again.
