They a bit dirty. They been locked up all winter. Mom refused to look at me, probably cause she been broody and shes a mess.

Jackie, my larger black silkie is broody yet again. In to the broody pen tomorrow as she is getting a bit thin and am not usually home from work after dark. I worry that she does not eat and drink enough. Do not have roos so she sits on anybody else's eggs. LOL usually Talula's, who is a white leg horn and lays huge eggs. Bless.

Our Black Silkie went broody yesterday. We were expecting it since she's been laying 3 to 4 eggs per week lately. She's our littlest hen so we monitor her closer than the other birds. If we get concerned that we haven't been home during the day to monitor a broody Silkie, we will take her gently off the nest after we get home and feed her in the house w/ either some cooked meat, can or fresh corn, raisins, multi-grain bread, whatever she'll eat, and we give 1 drop of liquid children's no-iron Poly-Vi-Sol on her beak. Since broody appetites are lower we supplement w/ a Poly-Vi-Sol drop 2 to 3x/week. It seems to energize them and stimulate their appetite and it makes certain she's getting some kind of nutrients if she isn't eating enough on her own.

You're so nice to your birds. I dump mine at the other end of their pen and make them walk back past their food. It's some exercise and they always stop for a snack. They are pretty good at getting up on their own occasionally. I just do insurance.

TY! But I'm not THAT nice lol -- only to the smallest Silkie since we had to take her to the vet so many times the last couple years w/ CRD issues. This year, even w/ all the rain, we've been lucky she stayed healthy so far. We've really enriched/fortified/supplemented the flock's diet over winter since losing 2 hens this summer to heat-related issues. I had 4 birds, so losing two of them means I lost HALF my backyard flock! It's a good thing I had a Breda on order so that I'm up to 3 girls now and expecting another later this year to bring it up to 4 again. I do what you do w/ broodies, lift her off the nest a couple times daily and put her at the back of the yard so while running back to her "empty" nest, she'll stop to dust-bathe for a few minutes, stop to eat and drink, and run/exercise back to her coop nest. One Silkie comes out on her own but the oldest will sit on her nest until she dries up like a prune if we don't take her out a couple X's/day. At first it seemed like a chore to monitor broody Silkies but after 6 yrs it's just a normal part of our chicken chores for the day!
