Silkie thread!

I came home today and went to check on my tiny flock of silkies.  They are roosting in their nesting box.  My little black one - she is six years old - sneezed and has a little bit of a runny nose.  Do I need to do anything?  She was eating, drinking and acting normal.  She is up on the roost next to the rooster - like normal.  Just a sneeze and a slight runny nose.  All else is fine.

Worried....

Thank you

An occasional sneeze is okay, but if it is consistent or has any kind of nasal discharge, you should take action. Two of my Silkie girls starting sneezing, and then not looking so well. I ended up treating them with Vetrx, which is almost like a Vicks vaporub product in oil form. It totally cleared them up within a week, worth every penny! Just as a note, my silkies are white, and because this product is an oil, it has allowed all of the dustbathing dirt to stick to them, so they now look dirty. No problem that can't be fixed by a little trip to the chicken salon though! The chicken salon being my laundry sink... :p

This is my first silkie who I purchased 2 weeks ago and now I'm addicted!

My little Black Silkie has CRD issues and can have light head-shaking to serious wheezing. Because of her issues I take her to the vet each time. A couple times it was serious enough to warrant Baytril injections. Other times the symptoms were less severe and oral Baytril was prescribed. One time her nostrils crusted shut and vet had to perform light nasal surgery to clear the blocked nostrils. Some people isolate a runny nose chicken and give Tylan for 10 days in drinking water. It all depends on how the symptoms run the course on how to treat it. Since I know my Silkie has issues I monitor her very closely, per vet's recommendations we give vitamins in the feed to all the flock, and for injured, ill, broody, or molting hens, I give children's no-iron liquid Poly-Vi-Sol vitamin one drop on the side of the chicken's beak 2 or 3x/week until symptoms diminish.

This is how erect her stance is when she's okay

This is how frumpy she looks when she has respiratory issues - a sick Silkie is a sad sight!

Bless her heart. My silkies is doing fine today
I think it was isolated. Thank you so much for the informative reply. I will save it in a file so if I need to refer back to it I have it at my fingertips. Our silkies could be twins. Appreciate you taking the time to respond very much

Hello, Silkie folks! My Silkies are about 4 months old now, and it is looking like I have one cockerel and three pullets. (I know, it is hard to tell... but the cockerel is a definite.) I knew so little about Silkies when I hatched these, when I asked what the b/b/s was penciled on the egg, and the breeder said "Blue Black Splash," I thought that was a colour. I think I just realized that was the notation for three different colours housed in the same pen. Is that right? Here is my cockerel from the BBS egg. I think this would be blue, yes? The three others are white, partridge and paint. Here they are, when younger: If the blue cockerel ends up making chicks with the other silkies, what colours would be possible? I am especially interested in what would come of the cockerel and the paint, below (assuming it is a big pullet and not a mellow cockerel ;) ). Thanks for any answers you have come up with. I have tried looking at Silkie genetic web pages, and the info is too dense for me to extract anything.
Genetics are never that easy to get a grip on. Your bottom silkie looks to be splash , if that is the case your blue boy over her would give you 2 x possibilities, blue or splash. Here are the paint and splash colour charts.

Thanks I'm hoping to produce more similar thinking silver partridge silkies are the way I want to go.

Your girl is lovely! I would love to have one w/ her coloring. If you are breeding for Silver Partridge Silkies using her, you might consider keeping her bred to a non-bearded male since your girl looks to be non-bearded. Otherwise, breeding a bearded to non-bearded will diminish the bearded look on the bearded offspring. Both bearded and non-bearded are accepted standard but a half-bearded is kinda in nowhere-land. Just a thought. And have fun w/ your Silkie. They are a precious funny bunch!

Don't know why this little Black Silkie loves to gather debris in her "hair" -- today she picked up a white feather boa! We had rain today.

Other times she picked up spider webs or straw in her "hair" :
