Silkie thread!

I special order my feed from poulin and I get a high protein chick crumble and supplement oyster shells and grit. Lots of dark greens like romane and kale.
Do you still happen to have those adult or young adult silkie pullets by chance? I remember you saying you had some for sale (I think) but at the time I didn’t know if I had room. One my my silkies turned out to be a roo so just checking in!

3 month old splash. Comes from show lines although I’ve read that doesn’t really mean a lot for the offspring. She’s still feathering out and getting fuller by the day. Probably too young to rule anything out for sure but I’d like to know if so far she is looking like a good show potential. I made a thread and didnt get a lot of replies so here I am!

Also, is there a certain type of personality that’s idea for show? Sometimes her body looks longer than it is because she’s always hunching and scared of the world. She is a super quiet and shy bird. If I leave her outside and come back 3 hours later she no joke will be no more than 3 inches from where I left her. Maybe she lacks confidence  Or maybe she’s just a lonely bird. I thought at the time my other silkie was a pullet so I only got her so she lives along but spends time with the others although they ignore her. Next time I’ll get more than 1 chick at a time ugh. Lesson learned.

Anywho, thoughts and criticism welcome. I apologize in advanced for her appearance (and for he poor lighting in the photos). I washed her but a bunch of bedding got stuck to her and she needs to be brushed out. Also all her feathers coming in give her a scruffy appearance.

I notice my Silkie girls aren’t very active, if I trim crest around eyes they are more alert but you don’t want to do this if your showing. I don’t show but enjoy learning about SOP. From what I have learned from a few of the ABA master Silkie breeders. It takes about 8 months of age to fully be able to judge type and wings. So she has a lot of filling out to do, but looking good. What your looking for crest, body and cushion to make 3 circles. Wings should tuck tight under cushion and high making a smile. Pull wing out and make sure no split wing. This is only a few things That are judged. If you don’t have the ABA book of standards it is a great investment as it explains a lot on showing that applies to all breeds not just Silkies, as the bird is judged on everything from tip of beak to tip of toes. Two really good groups on Facebook are Silkie breeders chit chat and Silkies pure and simple. The American Silkie Bantam Club also has a website and if you join they have a forum, articles and explanation pictures galore. Here are a couple of my girls that I feel have good type, but since I don’t show it’s just my interpretation not proven.

Thanks so much for taking the time to write this all. That helps a lot. And I’ll check on her wings. I thought about trimming around her eyes since she’s still young and has time to grow it back but it makes me nervous. I know she can’t see well though. When I open my hand to give her treats she usually bites my finger and pecks everything but the treats. Pretty obvious she struggles! I tried a headband too. She hates it. But maybe I’ll try it again.

Your birds are very beautiful btw! Love the compact bodies, tight wings, and overall thickness of fluff. I have a ton to learn but to me yours look fantastic!

Okay just checked her wings. It almost looks like a split but when I looked closer it looks like maybe a wing feather is like stuck under the one before it......like it looks like a missing feather when really it’s tucked behind the neighbor feather if that makes sense?! I’m hoping they will fix themselves or maybe I just don’t know what I’m looking for. I did also pull her wings out as far as they could go. Is that wrong? They look perfect if you don’t stretch them all the way back.

I’ll keep an eye out on them. She goes crazy when you spread apart her feathers. Acts like you’re trying to cull her. So dramatic lol. Thanks again!
