Silkie thread!

Yellow tint doesn't hurt. It's just looks.

I have 5 white silkies that all are yellowed. One is brown half the time because she loves dirt.

New to Silkies
I've fawned over Silkies for years, I fell in love with their fluffy bodies and their delightful temperament the moment I saw my first one. I took the plunge after years of waiting and many years of raising several breeds of chickens.

I purchased 5 Silkie chicks from RK on May 1st. 14 days later I lost one; Failure to Thrive. :( I was able to get a replacement for her, a Polish. 4 days later I laid our sweet Polish baby to rest next to the Silkie, a freak accident in the brooder claimed her.

Everyone else is seemingly doing fine, they are now 22 days old, but I still helicopter them. Every peep and poop is analyzed closely, every sleepy head bob an assumed start to star gazing, every semi-disintrest in food is automatically Failure to Thrive again.

I'm terrified. I feel like I'm failing at my dream breed after loosing 2 babies, even knowing each one was a weird circumstance... :hit

It's really heart breaking, I've been so excited for this opportunity, and I've already had enough heartbreak to almost scare me off the breed... I feel like I shouldn't have gotten them some days, maybe then the 2 babies I lost would have had a better chance with someone who knows better than I do. :( I've been told they're really hard to keep, but I've also heard they're great starters......

When can I stop worrying? Am I not cut out for these birds? When are they 'sturdier'? I really need some guidance or reassurance. I don't want anything to happen to my remaining angels. :(

Relax. Sometimes chicks don't make it for whatever reason.

As long as you offer proper housing for silkies, there is no problem keeping them. Even in my wet climate mine do fine with covered runs and a dry house to sleep in. I also do not let them free range, but have a larger fenced and netted area where they can have a larger safe wandering space.

Are there any Silkie breeders on this thread that would be willing to help me troubleshoot chick deaths soon after hatch? If so, could you PM me so I can try to figure out what might be happening to chicks that have gone to other homes and then mysteriously died?
Troubleshooting for chick death is hard. Usually if they go to homes between 3 to 5 weeks coccidia is a problem. Temperature is a problem from hatch till about a month old as well as pasty butt. Nutritional concerns for the first few months and several other problems stress including where there kept and other household pets. I would be happy to help if I can

Sorry you lost two of your babies. They aren't that hard really to keep. Most everyone looses in the beginning. You will be fine. Do your research learn as much as you can and go to other chicken social medias.
