Here are a couple of girls with really good wings. They should be held close to their body. I like them to look like a smile. The first picture is a 5 month old pullet. She will fill in quite a bit more over the next few months with more fluff underneath her wings.

Thanks to all of you who responded to the tight wings question! Great info!! I think I'm getting the picture but still wondering at what age concern would happen. Especially the taping part for correction. Again, I really, really appreciate the help. I hope to breed awesome silkies some day!

What a precious girl! Love her name. I'll have to rememer that one! You might need some side photos for the gurus to see that can do a good job of evaluation. Unfortunately, I am not one of them! I have some hatchery girls too and I love them to pieces!

Foot feathering you can tell as chicks. If they do not have feathers on the middle toe as chicks, they most likely will not develop it.

Split wings I can usually tell at about 3 or 4 months, deff by 6 months. As for wing shredding, and feathering I would not cull unless terrible until after their first molt.

Three Cedar's hens have great wings, and I like the description she gives of the "smile". Joe also posted great pics of wings and nice foot feathering. I also use the "snap" test he describes when testing for tight wings.

I also recommend Sigrid's Silkie book. It goes into great depth about all faults including wings, and foot faults with great descriptions and pictures. Bren had copies a while ago...not sure if there are any left. I will try to find out and post here if there are still books available.

ETA: I hope Sundown Silkies dosn't mind me posting this link

but I LOVE this picture of one of her chick's feet....this is what I like to see on a chick! Beautiful feet and awesome feathering on a baby chick! http://www.sundownsilkies.com/apps/photos/photo?photoid=44803966

I can't tell much about her type from the front, but she sure is cute! One of the best looking hatchery silkies I have ever seen form what I can tell! She may not be competitive at an open show, but she is stunning for hatchery! Too cute and I LOVE the name. She looks so sweet!
