I have 12 silkie chicks that I hatched 4 weeks ago. I have handled each one about 3 times a day. I didn't think they would ever see me as anything but King Cong but some of them now walk up to my hand when I put it in the brooder and only a few run away peeping "help" when I go to pick them up. The ones I suspect are cockerels (just a feeling) are the friendliest. We'll see if I'm right.

This is what I think I will do for my breeding Coop the inside walls keeping the Girls, Boys and Babies separate would be made of chicken wire but the outside wall be soild! Look Good??

And yes there will be food and water in with the girls I forgot to draw that in

Thanks,

I would think maybe a larger broody/breeding/area though. Maybe the 10 hens and roo in that space and a whole nother coop for babies/broodies?
Somehow, my coops are always outgrown way too soon...my next one will be huge.

theyre so funny! I had a group of silkies who didnt have a clue about their nice new doghouse filled with shavings. I went out to check on them at dusk and they were gone! Nooo, there they were piled and smashed into a corner between the doghouse and fencing! LOL I shouldve taken a picture.
I have a small coop for 4 of my silkie hens with a ramp, its about 2ft high. I only feed and water them in the top, so they have to come up the ramp, but I did have to go out each night and show them how, LOL. Now they go up and down ok, but Ill bet when I trim their crests a little, it will help.
Others say their silkies never learn the ramp system, and still others say theirs fly up to a roost.

kfchickenlady - Thank you for the advice....maybe I will try to "teach them" a little more. I just figured they would follow each other, but if she was timid about going down the ramp it makes sense that she would be cautious about going up.

And Brendapa I love your coop! It looks so cute with the loft! If I can't coax them up, I may just try your indoor outdoor carpet idea!!!

I knew you all would have some great advice for a novice like me!!!! Thank you!
