I have another weird colored chick- I'm not worried about what color it is just how weird it changed. it hatched pure white iwth 2 black spots on the back. there have been some paints? or really poor whites from same mating. calico dad, blue mom (both split for lavender). it has changed almost 180degrees, now it's blue partridy with frosting. (it's the chick next to the font with the white head- the one in the back hatched as a partridged)

Mine just started to lay at 6 1/2 months and I did not see any signs. Some people see squating and some lay much later. Silkies can be very slow to mature.

I have this in my color notes that I save when the gurus speak!
"But it has been my experience, with my stock, that the Split Lavs, that do and
will, produce the Lavender color, have chipmunk stripes when born, then molt
out to Blue or Black or Splash etc. The Split/Blues that I have, have gone on
to molt lighter as they aged. The color on them is not a true Blue, in the
normal sense, and can easily be seen when put next to a "regular" blue. I
think the key for people to understand is exactly like Sonoran said:
"Lavender is a recessive gene, and it is not leaky--if a bird carries one copy
(split), you will only know it from breeding records, not from appearance. If
you breed splits back to their lavender parent or to each other you will get
some who are lavender. However, that does not turn OFF other colours
genetically present--blues and splash will still have the characteristics of
blue or splash; appearance will be closer to blue or splash than to lavender."
