Silkie thread!

Pics
I wonder if anyone else has considered giving their Silkie a 'hair' cut? I have 2 hens and 2 roos and one of my girls has such a Poof that im sure she cant see very well. I want to trim around her eyes a little bit because she doesnt seem to forage around like all of my other birds.

As long as you aren't going to show them, you can trim the feathers around their eyes.

I use baby scissors that are blunt on the ends and trim about 1/8 of an inch of the feathers all around their eyes. If they aren't heavily bearded you can trim just the top.

I have had some Silkies that, due to the heavy crest, failed to thrive. I caught it soon enough and trimmed the crest. It was like a whole new chicken evolved. When they can't see, and many can not, they don't eat properly and fail to move about as they should. Caged birds are not so affected, but my Silkies live in a large run just like all the other birds here. Clipping the Crest is standard procedure for many I have. If you are interested in showing then they really should be confined to keep the feathers nice and so they are more able to cope with their limited view.

My Silkie Hen has so much fluff she cant see at all. She hardly ever pecked around for food or moved around like the other silkies so I put her fluff in a loose pony tail. I really didnt want to cut her feathers so tried to think of something different. Now she is a totally different bird. Here is her before and after
