Silkie thread!

Wow! There are so many beautiful silkies on this thread!!!!
I have two Silkes, Luna (hen) and Cosmo (roo), my mom got them for me as extras with a trio of chicks she got from a backyard breeder, and I just love them! They are supposed to be purebred blue silkies. They are smaller than my other chickens, so I think they may be bantams? As far as color goes I think Luna might be a blue, but I cant find anything about what color Cosmo is! WHAT is going on there anyway???!!!

If one parent was a lavender and one a black it would be a black split to lavender. The best thing to breed to if you want lavender would be a lav or another split! Check out the Lavender silkies thread!

Split lav x split lav = 50% splits, 25 % non-splits, 25 % lavenders
Split lav x lavender = 50 % splits, 50 % lavenders

Thanks rilly10 for the input. I can't get my hands on a lavender to breed with this one so I guess it will have to be another black/lavender split. Can I then breed a lavender pullet from that hatch back to the grey parent? Then I would have a 50% probability of lavenders, right? Unless I can find a lavender at a price I can afford, this will have to be my method of getting my own lavenders. I have two black/split lavenders from the same parents. Still to young to sex. Perhaps one of them will be mated back to the grey. I don't know how much line breeding will cause inbreeding defects, do you?

I am so thrilled I just hatched my first silkies. I have 10 so far. 6 from Bobbi Porto's eggs and 4 from another seller. Geez if I'd have known silkie babies were this adorable, I would have gotten some a long time ago lol. Still hatching... some more with pips. Yeah!!!

This looks like as good a place as any to ask my newbie Silkie questions. I have a flock of Silkies coming, 4 hens and 5 chicks, and I may be getting an adult Roo soon....how big should my coop be (Just the house, not the yard) I plan to use 2 of the the hens to brood my full size hens (so they'll continue to lay), and one to raise more Silkies to sell. Will a 4 x 5 house be large enough? (They'll be able to get out to play)

And will they use a nest box if it's up high as long as I build a ramp to get them there or will they just lay their eggs on the floor?
I also read somewhere that they prefer to"dog-pile" rather than to roost should I plan on that or build a roost and see what happens?
