Yes, you would think that it would be black split to lavender. However this is the dirty little secret that no one is discussing. You do NOT get black split (visually) every time. There are all kinds of hidden genetics that pop out. Even Deb and Bren will tell you that they got a lot of mutts when they first started breeding the lavenders to blacks (first it was whites) to improve type. Now that being said, they are still split to lavender and carry one copy of the lavender gene. When bred to either another split lavender or a pure lavender, they will throw a percentage of lavender babies.

OH WOW!!!!!! They could be twins!!!!!! I wish we lived closer together, I'm in N. Florida. What are you going to do with yours when it's breeding age? If you decide to rehome it....think of me FIRST please!!!!! At this young age yours looks like a pullet. I think mine might become a cockerel, but it's too early to know for sure.

I was trying to find the paper I had this information on but I was told that you can put a lavender split with a splash or something like that and there was a possibility of getting lavender out of it. I could be wrong on the colors but the basic part is that if one had a splash and one that had the lavender gene there was a ?% of getting lavender.

If you can make the house bigger than 4 x 5 you'll thank yourself later on. It is sufficient for now, but no room to grow...

Nest boxes for silkies need to be low. Mine pile up on top of each other in a corner to sleep. The broodies have done well with a small laundry basket with large side holes for ventilation. It's about 10" x 14" I believe. Because I'm in Florida the heat has been my main problem so a covered nest box in the summer time was not appropriate. Now that it's cooling off, I will probably offer one that's covered. Most people set them a couple of inches off the floor, but not up high.
