Silkie thread!

I have. I'm not 100% sure it was wry neck, but it was definitely a head injury. I had a 4ish week old Silkie chick just suddenly start rubbing it's head on it's back, and always keeping his neck and head upside down. He would walk backwards until he found a corner and he looked so pathetic. It was an extremely sudden thing, I had checked the chicks just 2 hours before and all was fine, then we heard this commotion (these babies were kept in the house) and found the poor thing with his head upside down on his back. We immediately separated him and I jumped on the computer to do research. For the first couple days he couldn't eat much or drink, and I had to gently tilt his head forward so I could dip his beak in water. Anyway, everyday I gave him 3ish drops of Poly Vi Sol without Iron, 1 Vitamin E capsule with Selenium and also gave him electrolytes in his water. It took 2 people for us to give our baby his vitamins, but it worked. Just snip the tip off the vitamin capsule and use a syringe or something to feed it to the bird. Just be careful not to do it too fast, because you don't want the vitamins going into his lungs. We didn't see any change for a couple of days, but about 3 or 4 days after the start of treatment he started improving. (He started eating by himself a little, and I found that if I sprinkled the food on the ground in his brooder he was more easily able to see it compared to putting it in a dish. I only did this until he was able to lift his head up and walk around though) By about 9 days he was almost back to normal, just a slight head tilt. We continued to give his vitamins and by the 13th or 14th day (after first applying vitamins) his head tilt was gone and he was back to normal. Then we started slacking off on the vitamins. Doing treatments only once every other day, every two days, etc. He has fully recovered and is now living with his chick buddies again. If the bird does not improve within a couple days of treatment, you might need to get prednisone (I believe that's it) prescribed because it may be suffering from swelling of the brain.

Beth G. :

I wanted to share some of my juvies. I'm really loving them and can't wait to bring them to the BPS

I ususally let the kids show them so feedback would be great so I can help the two girls that want to enter them. Nothing better than seeing a big ole smile on a youngsters face when doing well at a show. Sorry Some are blurry

Okay I know she doesn't fit the APA standards for color but, I love this little pullet. She was my White Hen crossed with my Hattrick Cockrel. I'm thinking of entering her anyway to get feedback on type
