Ok, I realize due to the cuteness factor of this breed, this question may sound like true sacrilege, but I'd like to know. According to the Asian peoples, this breed is supposed to posess medicinal qualities in their meat and bone. Supposed to be good for arthritis and diabetes, so, has anyone ever eaten any of their culls/extra roos?? Found any benefits? Taste good?? I know I'll probably get slammed for asking, but calm down, I'm just curious and they are chickens afterall...

Anyone with a serious response will be appreciated, this is an honest question, and yes, I do own Silkies and love them to pieces!!

Debbi they are popularly used in the Asian Black Soup, and I have eaten Black Soup before made by a friend's parents. I sell my extra pet silkie boys knowing like my standard dual purpose boys, they're probably winding up dinner, and I have no problem with that. I know a few folks who utilize Asian populations near them to sell their culls for a little profit, so no it is not too horribly taboo.

Oh BTW its chicken meat - it tastes like chicken (go figure

) lol But the color is what will REALLY throw you off the first few times. Because there is so little meat on them, they are best for making broth, soup, dumplings, and the similar type dishes.

Hey,

No worries. Your only curious and I hope peeps don't blast you for curiousity.

I raise alot of breeds. Silkies, Orps, Cochins, Marans, Meaties, Etc....

Here's my input. I can not bring myself to process as silkie. I think it's the fact of the purple/black skin, purplish meat, purplish bone, and the fact that I've never met a mean silkie ever. I can however, process any other breeds without hesitation. My brother is married to my sis-in-law and they do eat them. They make a traditional soup and say it is beneficial to their immune system. Now do I agree with that???? ahh not really. I think the thought of chickens soup is good for soul is just that. It's personal preference I guess on what kind you put in the pot.

Hope this helps and I hope I do not offend anyone with speaking about this topic.

If I did I do send my sincere apologies in advance
