I've had 18 silkie chicks hatch since yesterday and 4 more eggs to go. They're so adorable. They're bbs, white and partridge. I'll get a pic when they're all done and fluffed up. One is looking like it may not make it. It pipped thru a vein and lost a bit of blood but I hope I was able to catch it in time so it will make it. Just needs some rest I hope.

Brody's Broodello :

As with other projects you could breed to black as well. I will be breeding McSilkie to his full siblings, Salmon girls & black hens this fall. Now that they are thru with the feather dropping! lol It's like EVERYONE decided to molt the same night, I think they all got together to see if they could make me have a heart attack. I can just imagine them in fluffy huddles giggling and plotting!

So..I have a couple questions. What colors did you originally breed together to get McSilkie? I have a cockerel that looks a fair bit like your McFlurrie, except that his red/mahogany coloring isn't as deep and his crest is a little bit grayer. What colors can you expect from a Black x Salmon breeding? Do you get Salmons and/or split Salmons? (Sorry, I'm still pretty new to genetics. Just want to make sure I understand it all, lol.)

Brody's Broodello :

The thing to remember is the Salmon is really Silver Wheaten, so you can breed to the exact color patterns as a Faverolle breeder. So if you follow the tried & true methods of that breed, you can't go wrong, plus they have tons of practice working with those genes already worked out. Unlike other colors that need time to work out a plan for breeding, this color already is a working color.

I guess I should go find the Faverolle thread!

I'm probably not too much help in this department. I know some people put their silkies in cages about three months before the show to get them in condition. At this time, my daughter shows and she basically just picks right out of the pen who she wants to take and gives them their baths, cuts their nails, and trims their beaks a couple days before the show. I do add a scoop of Poultry Conditioning food to their regular food about once a week and mix it in. There are some good lists online telling you what to bring with you to the show. We bring their testing paperwork, along with paper towels, baby wipes, vet rx (my daughter uses a q-tip and puts a little on their beaks at the show), brush, extra woodchips for the cages, food & water dishes (although they do provide cups for the water), and oxine. We spray them with oxine mixture (to help kill any bacteria) before going to the show, the cage/wood chips before putting the bird in, and the birds when we get home again. Oh, and I ALWAYS take tylenol with me. It is also a good idea to bring a book to read because it can be a long day.

I'm sure I am forgetting some stuff and there are probably people on here that can give you lots more tips.
