Silkie thread!

Quote: A male with female feathering. Rounded hackle and saddle feathers, female patterning. It is a dominant gene. I used to have a henny feathered blue partridge boy. Caused all kind of confusion as he had female pattern and shape, and I was told more than once that he was a hen with a large comb (large for a hen, not a cock). But he definitely fathered chicks for me

A silkie?

Any pictures? That's an interesting one!

Good Morning,
I've been checking my silkie hen's eggs for fertility for over a month but haven't seen that obvious "target" around the "white spot". However, this egg does seem to have a bulls-eye appearance. (Or is it wishful thinking?) Is Mysty Blue's egg fertile?

That is most definitely a bulls-eye!! Congrats!!
One of my little splash hens is sitting on her egg today. :) One thing tho, is we have an issue with doors. We have to change the coops make the doors for the Silkies to go out. I take them all out on nice days (into a covered run/pen), bring them in at night. Should I let her out some during the day? It's going to get cold soon, don't know if the egg will get too cold.

And....on another note.... CATDANCE EGGS ORDERED (my Christmas present).

Your broody won't need to go out but she will need a place to poo away from the eggs. It's a huge load!
My little Isabel's chick is turning into such a little cutie! Only about 8 weeks old, I feel like it's a boy. The name is Boots, because it looks like he's wearing feather pants and boots.

Finally got a black cockerel
That's a really nice cockerel! Look forward to seeing pictures as he develops!

Very interesting!

Question for the experts while we are discussing weird gender appearances. I have two blue silkies and while I was convinced that I had two boys left I am still a bit unsure. Both have a mullet going on which I thought was streamers and both have a touch of gold on the backs of their necks. The only real difference between them is that one has a largish comb and one has a small comb.

I was sure I had a pullet and a cockerel, then I was sure both were cockerels, now I am just confused. It will be Saturday before I can get some good pics to show you guys though. Any thoughts before then? Can hens have a 'mullet' hairdo?

Quote: I've never heard either term. I can see how an S is a fair descriptor of silkie's type, but never heard of it in quite this way (SType). A definitely never heard of Y type anything.
I think a bird would have to have two heads to be shaped like a Y

I don't know where on here but someone who had Silkies said theirs was a Y type body, I am new to this Silkie stuff and just wanted clarification. It is obvious to me now that whoever said that either had other genetics at work or had no clue to what they were saying. I am always looking to further my knowledge on everything chicken(all 8 months of it now). That is why I need you experienced peeps to edumacate me

So, I'm setting up my new coop.. I have 3 questions:

___ * Where do your silkies sleep?

I know they like to make a pile, and mine do too. I am trying to make a nice little area for them but every night they are in a different spot.

___ * Would they like to roost if I put a bar about 2" - 3" off the ground?

___ * Also, do they poop in their sleeping spot all night like birds on a roost do?

Can anyone share pictures of their silkie beds?.... Thanks!
