Silkie thread!

Well these are the ones I hatched from the chickens I bought here in Maine. Not a very good line :( Not fluffy enough for me, so I'm going to sell these as pet quality birds. I have some in the incubator right now on day 11 I bought on here from MRobbins. Someone recommended her or Catdance to me. I'm pumped! The pictures of hers are the fluffiest little suckers! Let me know when you hatch yours out!
so fun! I love finding fellow mainers :) or errr, mainahs.. LOL

Well....that was the last picture I ever got of him. I found him dead this morning in the wyandotte pen. I don't know how or why he got in there, but it looks like the wyandotte rooster attacked him and managed to peck the soft spot on his head, killing him, based on the little bloody spot there. He was such a beautiful boy, still a baby. I'm going to miss him so much

So sorry for your little guy. He was gorgeous!

I'm so excited. Looks like hubby and I are going to be getting two Silkies chicks from aoxa to help tide us over till we move to our farm. I'm picking up a baby playpen this week and supplies for a brooder to get things ready as soon as they hatch. Plus Al wants to test temps to make sure our brooder will be good.

Quick question. Can you use a ceramic heat emitter at night instead of a red bulb? We have some from a friend when he got out of reptiles and they give off heat very well and wouldn't keep me up at night like a bulb would while still keeping the temps proper(I'm planning on keeping the brooder in my bedroom).

thank you everyone for the condolences. I'm still pretty upset about it, but life goes on here at the farm. The turkeys were gobbling at absolutely everything today, and those crazy birds helped cheer me up. My silkies have cheered me up today as well. My 4 m/o Macho, 'heart boy' has really been filling out, and his heart shape is much fatter.

And a hen which I had just about given up on as pet quality (approaching 8 months) has really started to fill out in the tail and crest. She had the skimpiest little tail and teeny crest for the longest time, but now she's looking quite beautiful. Nothing like my best hens, but still a looker. I still don't like her crest, but her body is looking nice and 'fat'.

Good for you!

You'll be so in love with these sweet silkies. I'm not sure about the ceramic heater but it should work. I wouldn't think a red bulb would keep you awake either, though. I use a purple reptile bulb. Have fun with your new babies.

Just love both him and your white pullet. I have a partridge that has that heart-look too. As a matter of fact, she seems to stick her chest out all the more if I'm taking pictures and pose for me.
Here is my heart girl, Cinnamuffin (aka: Fluffy) :

They are beautiful! And that little cockerel, I'm jealous.

I've hatched out some of Mary's eggs. They had to ship from Georgia to California so I did't get the best hatch rate though. The first chick that hatched for me last February was Mysty Blue and I actually have 4 of her eggs going into lockdown TOMORROW!

I'm just a little excited for hatchday. Mysty Blue is a dark blue and her boyfriend was a splash so I can't wait to see their babies! Good luck with your hatch.....Be sure to update us and post pictures.

HaHa, she does think she is the queen (or a centerfold), but she is the sweetest, most cuddly chicken. Cinnamuffin will stick her chest out like "look at me"! I'd like to enter her in a poultry show next year. She would be perfect because if she isn't bending over eating, she is literally standing in that 'S' shape that judges look for. So, she wouldn't mind being caged up either.
