Silkie thread!

Hi , if this is not the right place to ask this - i am sorry :-(. I am going to hopefully pick up 3 silkies soon. I want to know what kind of a Coop would be good for them. I keep looking at sm ones online and they don't seem right to me . They would not be free-ranging. I could get one made if any good plans were available - or if anyone knew of some online made to purchase that work great for bantams ? Thank you for your time :) Michele

We had 45 Silkies hatch yesterday! A good mix of blue, splash, white, paint, buff and grey. Maybe a couple of partridge. They are sooooo cute!
Wow!! You are in chick heaven! Please post pictures. :)

Here's part of the brochure I give out with my chicks. Hope it helps somewhat.

They have silkied feathers which are beautiful and wonderful to pet, but they don’t shed water and so they should not be allowed out in the rain if it's cold or in a pen where the rain can blow in on them. Second - Quality Silkies have large crests that can become a visibility and an irritation problem usually around 10 weeks. I trim above and especially below the eyes with baby nail scissors. Look for feathers that curl into the eye. It is not difficult and only needs to be done about every 3 months. Third - Silkies have a tender head as they do not have a hard skull. They should be protected from things like a peck on the head from a larger breed chicken. Also, if startled they will sometimes fly straight up in the air and because they can’t see above them they can hit a sharp edge or corner of wood, etc. This can cause a serious head injury. Keep this in mind when designing their pen. Thin foam can be added to the edge of a board if you think it’s in an unsafe place in their pen. Fourth - Most Silkies do not roost. They prefer to sleep in a big pile. They most likely will not climb a narrow ramp without training.

Look at these two boys cuddled up. lol Gotta love the silkie roosters.

And what do you guys think about this pullet? Also 5 months old. Would she be worth breeding? She has good toes/feet and no split wings. She has a ton of wax on her crest and makes it look really flat. I might just have to wash her head to see what she'll look like with a fluffed up 'hair do'. Lacks a little bit on the foot feathering department also.
I don't think I'll ever use her for breeding myself, I don't have a white rooster. But I'm still thinking she would be worth breeding? Maybe I'll sell her. What would something like this be worth?

Thank you , yes , you did educate me .. help me.... i just learned that they dont really like to roost. So this is great... that certainly helps in searching for a coop.
