Silkie thread!

Off I go to Catdance's farm to pick up a special needs cockerel for a pet to have a forever home. Gonna pair him with our Porcelain pullet when done with quarantine. She will also be a pet since we will only be breeding B/B/S.

I will get pics of him and the 3 Catdance chicks today, I promise

I'm about to put 7 eggs in the 'bator to see what happens. I'll check in a week to see if they are fertile. I'm thinking no, since Yoshi can't seem to get the hang of it. I did see him mate ONCE tho. Now, he's just mean to the hens, doesn't even try anymore. We'll see!

Good Morning,
I have not had a chance to post on here lately, but I do try to read several pages each day to get a little dose of silkie cuteness and info. Our family will be adopting my little cousin from Arizona (any day now) and when we get home I plan to fill the incubator with silkie eggs. Here is a picture of my son and our soon-to-be little boy:
This was taken in Old Sacramento.

I thought I'd also share some pictures of some of my silkies at our new place.

Yesterday "Cloud" and "Shadow" were looking pretty by the grape plants..........until I realized they were nibling on the budding grape leaves. Those naughty girls.
Cloud is really developing into a pretty white silkie. Her daddy was a Bobbi Porto silkie roo. Shadow is also very nice, but does have wry tail. :/

Silkie nap-time.
Someone picked up both of these chicks from my flock this morning. One had a single comb, like the daddy (out of 4 chicks) and the other has some red leakage on it's feathers. I'm happy they went to a great home.

Here's all 4 of the babies from the test hatch of my own splash rooster & blue hen. I think they hatched in January:
All 4 chicks, with the crippled one up front and the 2 just sold in the very back.
The little cripple and the remaining chick will be going to a sweet neighbor who will care for them.............leaving me with only my bigger silkies.

I can't wait to hatch more babies.

I will be doing more of my own flock and shipped eggs -lots of eggs.

Here are my 5 older silkies. Splash rooster, dark blue hen, partridge hen and a white and black pullet. Eventually I will have a BBS, partridge and white breeding pen. Leo Pierre is a great boy and doesn't try to breed the 2 pullets....only the 2 laying silkie girls. (He's smarter than we gave him credit for!)

And last of all, I wanted to share what we did with a quail-coop which I re-did into a silkie coop...........

OK, enough of my photo-bombing this thread. Hope you're all having a great weekend and a Blessed Easter.

What do you guys use for feeders?
I cleaned my coop today and discovered that there was a TON of feed mixed in with the bedding. I swear, there was almost more food than bedding.
lol.png
Such a waste. This started when I switched them off the pellet to a crumble and mixed some other goodies in there. I think the birds are having a party in the feeder now, looking for those good pieces, and there's food everywhere.

We have these dog feeder looking things, which is totally asinine in my opinion.
Sort of like this. I don't know who came up with this idea but I'm changing it for my birds at least!
lol.png

I'll have to take a trip to the feed store this weekend and I'll check their feeders while I'm there but I thought I'd ask what you guys find to be a good idea for feeders and NOT wasting food.
I have lots of store bought feeders but this is my favorite that I make from Costco pie holder. I lose zero feed! The can is full of rocks and the 1" lip on the pie holder prevents scratching the feed. It's throw away plastic so only lasts about a year but it's free with the pie!!

I finally got some decent pictures of my black pullet!!

Her favorite pose is showing me her butt... But today she was just hanging out...or maybe she was striking a pose?

This one cracks me up, the little head tilt!

Awesome girl!
My babies are starting to grow in their crests and fluff. I think they're going to be impressive little guys/gals when they get older

Pam, My young white rooster was horrible for a while!!!! I finally just left him in with them . I think what he was doing looked wore to me than what it was lol! anyway, he has become much more proficient :) I also have one buy that I never see breed the girls.. but I get fertile eggs from him

My two white roos are exactly the opposite. .they mate a different hen, no joke, at least every 5 minutes. They've been doing this (and I've been getting fertile eggs) since before they were 5 months (the hens were 8 months). And if I let all my birds out to free range, they spend all day chasing OEGB and various LF hens. I've seen the pair of them team up to mate a HUGE cochin hen! Poor hen stayed crouched until both were done. I would love to see those babies ;)

Question for all you "Silkieites"
big_smile.png

Never had Silkies before.Went to TSC and saw 8 light grey chicks with feather feet. Some had 5 toes, like Silkies, others didn't.Do ALL Silkies have 5 toes?
